I think the best place to download from is newsgroups using or irc. Much of the files on p2p programs come from these 2 sources to begin with (ftp sites still have some draw, but not speed on the whole). Newgroups are the fastest way to download each time, it continuously gets new data all the time, has a vast posting set of users, and it's the safest. I mean bittorrent is great, but in order to even approach newsgroup speeds you have to have an assload of seeders/leechers and they have to have a decent connection. I continually get files much faster through newsgroup. I can maintain the maximum dl rate all the time. One catch is the support of your isp. Some suck. Some delete posts before they get to you once they are 4+ days older. Some don't have support for certain groups. However, I have used adsl and cable modem provides and have been able to get pretty much whatever i wanted. posted by volonteshiva |

That looks interesting, does newsbot have any options to download all chunks of a file without having to manualy go through a 20,000 strong post list and tick each part for download? posted by Crossfade |

Crossfade: That looks interesting, does newsbot have any options to download all chunks of a file without having to manualy go through a 20,000 strong post list and tick each part for download? well for one it's newsbin. no big deal though. And yes, it's a binary newsreader and one of the best. Let's say someone posts a 350mb xvid/mp3 tv show. It will be broken up into let's say 23 15MB files. Thus you will see 23 posts and download 23 files. Now each of these files are likely broken into like 50+ smaller chunks by the news servers/posting process. But you won't see any of this. You just see the files to download like you would on a website. posted by volonteshiva |

Xbox group is chockablock full of stuff though Pretty much I have just used the newsgroups that my adsl/cable modem isp offers. They are free. There are many newsgroup isps/servers that you can pay for that are much better. These will retain posts for 1 month plus, and they will pretty much carry every group. What pc groups are you looking in? One of the best sites for seeing if something you want has been posted, as well as info on usenet isps/servers, go to: Another thing about binary news readers, they are really big memory whores and will take up some hd space to keep newsgroup data current on your system. Basically 1 gig of ram and 40+gig hd are more than enough. The HD data for newsbin may reach 1-2gig depending on whether your flush your newsgroup caches or not. Another thing seemingly unique to irc/usenet are par and rar files. par files will repair corrupt individual rar blocks or whole files. I can expand on this unless you already know about it. posted by volonteshiva |

Emule is a great thing because you can find almost anything that's out there. However, nothing is faster than Bittorrent. It's just hard to find the torrent files. Binary newsgroups are fuckin' slow and it's really hard to find good servers. Most servers cost money and/or don't support binary newsgroups. However, I once had a program that could automatically scan for newsservers. That was a cool thing. The program checked the headers of random newsgroup messages for server names and the tried to establish connections with those servers. If the connection worked, the servers were included in a server list. The search was then continued recursively with the new found servers. Great approach for finding fast servers. I've forgotten how the program was called. I believe it was the News File Grabber. Maybe anyone here knows more? posted by anonymyus |

...oDC Iceland. It's possibly the best p2p program I've ever come across. Excellent interface, share lists (you download the file list of a user, and see everything he's sharing), high speed, everything. posted by northern_james |

Binary newsgroups are fuckin' slow and it's really hard to find good servers. Most servers cost money and/or don't support binary newsgroups. What are you talking about? Bittorrent can be fast but it still depends on the speed of the users sharing the files! What fucking newsgroup servers are you talking about? I ALWAYS maxed out my bandwidth connection when dling from newsgroups and I rarely get decent speeds consistently throughout a bittorrent. One minute it's 1k/s, then it's 30k/s, etc. And even when there are 1000 people sharing the dl, I don't get maximum speed or even 1/2-3/4 speed. Maybe only a few times and I was doing several torrent files a day for months. Perhaps I have been fortunate that my broadband isps have had decent newsgroup support, but regardless, the speed for them was always high. posted by volonteshiva |

I really didn't mind the newsserver of my own broadband ISP (news.t-online.de ). Just checked it out. It does carry some binary groups and it's pretty fast (about 25kbps), but the really cool groups aren't supported. I guess I gotta look for another server. You're lucky! posted by anonymyus |
