The end came with the shocking suddenness of many Mike Tyson fights. First, the flurry of devastating punches, then a fighter falling bleeding to the canvas.
Even more shocking was that fighter was Tyson himself. ... At the age of 38, Tyson ran out of energy after trying to put Williams down for the first three rounds and was driven to the canvas with a final right hand that may have signaled the end of his hopes to become a serious heavyweight contender again. ... Tyson's record fell to 50-5-2 and the loss was his first in a non-title fight. Tyson earned about $8 million for the 57th fight of a pro career that began 19 years ago. He could only keep $2 million of it, with the rest going to pay off some of the $38 million he owes to creditors, under a bankruptcy reorganization plan. After watching several Tyson fights I have the feeling that whenever Tyson gets hit, something in his animal-minded head says "Ooops, I cannot beat my opponent. He is my alpha animal. It's too dangerous to cause him pain". And that happened this time, too. After Danny Williams landed a few hits Tyson had to subordinate. Tyson even cried afterwards, said to his trainer that he is "Sorry". posted by knn |

knn...frank bruno rocked tyson when he was at his best...but he never went on to beat him the way i see tyson...he was at his best when he was uncontrollable...now he is on medication to kurb his mood swings and anger and these take the edge away from him that he had back in the day...he should have quit after the holyfield fight when he still had a reputation as a fighter... posted by the anomaly |

What's sad about all of this is how many people exploited a young, talented boxer. I mean, he had almost everybody stealing out of his pockets. Now he is a washed-up boxer who'se only purpose to fight is to get out of debt...sad. posted by GP |

He was a phenomenal fighter back in the day, i don't think anyone could beat him even today if he was still in the same shape/mindset posted by Crossfade |

Quote: He was a phenomenal fighter back in the day I disagree a bit, since many of his opponents were sooo frightened that they didn't react appropriately. The same applies to Madonna and other icons of the 80ies: Can you point your finger to something Madonna has done that would justify her fame nowadays? posted by knn |

I finally saw the fight Danny Williams vs Mike Tyson. It shows me 2 things: 1) Tyson has lost his ability to hit exactly. He often misses 2) The opponents have changed. Now they can take much more. I am sure such punches of Tyson would have annihilated his opponents in the 80ies. posted by knn |
