So true. Actually Spyware is not even the term that describes the viciousness. Suddenly the computer runs slower. Suddenly Search engine result (e.g. Google results page) lead to other sites. Suddenly windows pop-up out of nowhere from time to time. GAIN and WHENU suck. So many sites have those message boxes that ask you to accept WHENU or GAIN. Especially music lyrics sites it seems. posted by knn |

Perhaps the most disturbing factor is that difference in media attention. A harmless Virus (yes, some are harmless) still receives heavy media attention, while invasive spyware and Adware which; "hijacks" your computer, steals your bandwidth, invades your privacy, monitors your activity, pops up adverts (even when you're not browsing), Redirects your browser (without your consent), Installs software (including peak rate porn dialers), protects itself to stop you removing it, disables virus and adware scanners, disables access to virus and adware software sites, disables certain security features, opening up your system to further attack Receives very little (if any) media coverage. Could this be anything to do with the fact that this type of software is designed solely for marketing reasons - collecting stats to enable targeted advertising, displaying adverts and redirecting you to certain sites. And the media is run by Marketing companies. knnknn: GAIN and WHENU suck. So many sites have those message boxes that ask you to accept WHENU or GAIN. One indication of the legitimacy of things likes this is how many times you have to say no. A genuine site with a legitimate plugin would allow you not to accept it. But so many of these sites popup the box, and when you hit cancel or close, they pop up a message telling you you MUST accept the agreement. They then continue to bug you with it until you agree - no matter how many times you say NO. B.T.W. Always use the window close button (or ALT-F4) rather than the Cancel or NO buttons, as some sites fake the requester and pressing cancel still counts as a click to them. The defences these companies use always points to the ignorance of the user; "the software doesn't install without the user concent - they probably didn't read the terms and conditions" or "the user must have clicked in agreement and that gives us the right to..." posted by Marl64 |

I posted details of where to go to get help debate-topics.com... Software to be wary of. Quicktime Player (Browser plugin) Realmedia Player (Browser plugin) All Peer 2 Peer Software EVERYTHING you download. New.Net plugin (and other domain access addons) That last one is particularly odd, it promises to allow access to new domains, which is r-u-b-b-i-s-h* Domain access is handled by your ISPs DNS servers NOT your browser. Oh and get some software to protect your registry

You will have access to much more domains than before. Your ISP resolves only standard extensions as ".com" or ".net". With this plugin also hundreds of others are resolved, e.g. ".ltd" posted by knn |

Quote: ISP's who would like to provide their users with immediate access to New.net's™ domain names may do so by making one simple change to your systems - New.net. The fact remains that if access depends on this spyware riddled plugin, then those domains will stay unvisited by me. posted by Marl64 |
