The problem with Catholicism is that it has WAY to many faults. Bhuddism is great because it's more of becoming to peace with yourself and the things around you religion rather then worshiping a vengeful bastard who made laws that contradict themselves. Also Bhuddists worship Bhudda, coolest god ever. posted by hungarian kid |

Heh, pardon the ignorance. Wasn't there several versions of Bhudda? Like God Bhudda, the Bhudda of thought etc.? And the story of the Bhudda who travelled searching for self-enlightment? I'm gonna go research this so I don't make anymore of an arse of myself! posted by hungarian kid |

Quote: but I wouldn't want to worship a statue of a FAT, smiling, half-naked, bald man I think being fat symbolizes something. Luck, love or so. I don't know whether Buddha was really fat. On the other hand people are worshipping a tortured man/corpse on the cross. Is that better? posted by knn |

Quote: On the other hand people are worshipping a tortured man/corpse on the cross. correction: christians worship the SPIRIT of Jesus, they don't bow down before sculptures of him and worship it. christians don't bow down before the sculptures, instead, christians talk to the Lord directly, through prayer. many buddhists actually have little incense things in their house, along with little pictures or statues of buddha and the several people connected with buddha that are worthy of worship. then they kneel and take the incense and start bowing to the pictures/statue thing and believe me, i know what i'm talking about, because my family used to have the incense thing in my house too posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

nocturnal_anonymous: Buddha is not cool. Buddha is not a god. Buddha is a man. There are idols and statues that carve imitations of him portraying a FAT, smiling, half-naked, bald man. I don't remember ever seeing a picture of a buddha with a dot on his head. The dot on the head is a symbol found in Hindu theology. Buddhism is distancing itself from Hinduism. Yes One-der-man Buddha is said to have three different bodies, one of which is seen as a kind of God. That is why they make the statues of Buddha. Much like the Christian Ikons (Eastern Orthodox and (technically) Roman Catholic) which allow the believer to focus on Christ, the statues are used to focus on Buddha in nirvana and thus are used to follow him to enlightenment. The first buddha was not fat. In fact he was horrifically thin. Buddha spent many years of fasting and self-denial before he discovered the 'middle way'. The fat buddha is known as 'laughing buddha'. Surely one does not have to be a long haired man tortured and bleeding on a cross in order to be holy? I don't remember Jesus ever being described as happy... I'm not a buddhist nocturnal, but I find your comments intolerant and vulgar. posted by fatpie42 |

You mean YOUR denomination doesn't worship through scultures and images. In fact it is a major part of the Orthodox faith to worship through ikons. In fact orthodox theology states that Jesus himself was an ikon. "No one has seen God, but the son has made him known". Those who saw Christ did not see God directly, but could see God within him. The same is true for the ikons. So before you continue mocking buddhism, do note that you are also dissing other older denominations of your own religion. posted by fatpie42 |

What strikes me as funny is that while the followers of christ or god (and yes the neglect of capitals is intentional) are supposed to learn about tolerance and acceptance, they don't seem to get it. There is nothing wrong with spirituality, or the finding of faith in oneself and the world around you, that's all well and good. Organised religion on the other hand, really causes more trouble than it's worth. Everything has faults, it's the way the faults are dealt with that create value in my opinion. posted by Zanna_Dawnwings |
