I would choose the fifth one down only it's got that "even after birth" thing. I'm for the Judith Thomson argument. posted by fatpie42 |

Thompson's argument considers the rights of the baby AND the right's of the mother. The fact is that the mother has a greater right to her body that the baby. If it were possible to remove the baby without killing it then that would be what she would suggest. However, it just so happens that every method of removing the baby at a very young age involves killing it. The arguments this poll has taken into consideration do not take the mother's rights into account properly. posted by fatpie42 |

The mother should be allowed the right to choose because she has more rights to her body than the foetus does. Your other "mother gets to choose" option sounds more like Tooley's view (which allows infanticide - sick f**k posted by fatpie42 |

Would you be of the opinion that if the birth of the baby would kill the mother (but the baby would survive) then the mother should die? I think that the doctor who did not perform an abortion in a situation like that would be indirectly guilty of murder. I would not be able to sit by and let the mother die. posted by fatpie42 |

I think a mother should be allowed to decide what to do with her body and her child. Sure it is to some extent a murder as no one actually knows when a group of cells becomes something more, kind of an individual, but still the mother must have a right to decide whether she wants that on her consciousness. Whether abortions were legal or not, women always practised that. Whatever religion, century or country. So it's just reasonable to allow abortions and let it be done by professionals rather then by some *amateurs* who will destroy the woman's reproductive health forever. posted by mymla |

Quote: still the mother must have a right to decide whether she wants that on her consciousness. Well, the pope disagrees. Even after a rape the "Mother should bear the cross of pregnacy", as the pope puts it. posted by knn |

then I am afraid I seriously disagree with the pope on this issue. especially in a case of rape pregnancy I think mother should be able to terminate it. What a life for a child it would be from the very beginning! But of course if you consider that as another *test* from God, a cross you have to bear thru your life... Against such argument nothing works so probably me and pope would have hardly understood each other. posted by mymla |

Unless you are Roman Catholic, the pope doesn't come into this. Even the strict and equally old denominations of the Eastern Orthodox Church do not give the pope the final say in the matter. In my opinion religion and ethics are two very different topics. Religion is about intentions and motivations. Ethics is about good and bad. Religion is more focussed on good and evil - and that requires a different approach. On an ethical basis what do we think about abortion? posted by fatpie42 |
