»Is the US prepared for the next attack?«

It always makes me wonder why the terror prevention concentrates so much on checking flight customers.

They are fixated so much on airplane passengers that they forget other possible attack targets, such as bombs on ships, brought to explosion under a bridge or so (as stated in NBC's Meet the press). Or attacks on water/oil/internet/electricity crosspoints.

You can kill far more people by detonating a bomb in trains than in an airplane

X-ray checks before boarding on a train - Is this the future?

New ideas for Al-Quaida

A few days ago I wrote the above post, and today I read at
Quote:
Al-Qaida may attempt to launch attacks in U.S. cities using helicopters or rented limousines packed with explosives as weapons, the FBI said in two nationwide bulletins.

Terror operatives could attempt to hijack commercial, charter or tourist helicopter flights and use them in suicide attacks against buildings, parades or sporting events, said one of the intelligence bulletins obtained Monday.

Limousines, the FBI said, could be especially useful to terrorists because they are larger than regular cars and might draw less suspicion than trucks.

''Limousines often convey an impression of authority or prestige, which may facilitate their access to specific locations in a building or a facility denied to the general public,'' the FBI bulletin said.

i think the fact that they are finding out about these plots is a major improvement

the other argument is whether or not its a good idea to publicise everything about potential terror threat

on the one hand it shows the public that there is a huge effort going on to stop attacks(always a good vote winner) and on the other hand its arguable that its doing the terrorists job for them...although the terrorist care more about killing that frightning people

How about..

..all the 'terrorist threat leaflets' adverts on tv in the uk now, i find it fuckin hypocritical of the govenment to do this when for the past 40years the IRA have been blowing shit up and no one makes an advert about them! it's all bullshit and the powers that be are trying to make us afraid!

I'd say it's better to tell as much as you could. People prefer to be aware, me at least. They appreciate work being done for them and effort to stop the attcks.
As for the terrorist's job done for them... I'd prefer to hear about possible attacks from the news than from some aquaintances in the form of gossip. Besides, people cannot be scared all the time, and when they know something is done, they are less afraid. On the other hand, well, I cannot trust my government as well as some people doubt the US: whether the threats are authentic or were made up for the reasons of... popularity or whatever.

We have a lot of such things in Russia now. Notes in black-and-red-and orange warning you. People are more attentive now, with all the experiense they had.

To stay on-topic:
I would say the US is certainly prepaired better now to any attacks than before. Another question is, what are terrorists prepared to do. Who will be more sophisticated in the end...

Experts say, the US still lacks basic security measures

When it comes to airline security: Yes. By all other means: Only a tiny bit improved as you can watch experts telling on "Meet the press":

=> "Terrorism, Ports vulnarable"
and
=> "Another attack, July 25th 2004"
