the work that went into that is amazing. the enigma that is crop circles came about because of vortex' of air creating circles in the cornfields didn't it? and then fools stood around saying "hey bubba, that looks just like a big flying saucer don't it!"? Anyone know when the first reported circle was? posted by Crossfade |

They say that crop circles are first mentioned in some 17th century texts. By now there are about 10,000 of reported ones 90% of which come from Southern England. Quote: crop circles came about because of vortex' of air creating circles in the cornfields didn't Most of them are on the wheat fields, not corn. Some even think it's symbolic as wheat's been so important in the history of humans. And I guess it's not exactly a vortex of air that creates them; the eye-witnesses say that the crops just lie down. The whole process takes no more than 30 seconds! posted by mymla |

There are also stone circles, meaning that such patterns are also seen on paths where tiny stones lie. But since that is less visible, it's less known posted by knn |

same patterns like the sacred geometry ones or with messages in them (like the one on the picture you've posted)? do you maybe have any images? I wonder what those paths are; another interesting thing about the circles is that they very often appear at places that are special in some kind - used to be sacred, or places that were mentioned to be avoided by animals, or with some previous anomalies to them. posted by mymla |

..reading somewhere that a lot of crop circles appear on Lay lines. Maybe that's why a lot of them are down south as there are many lay lines in the south and Stone Henge is supposedly at the centre of a few. posted by Crossfade |

You seem to remember exactly the right thing I've just checked it 'cause I never heard about it before and yup that's true that some circles are on the crossings of the ley lines. There are many ley lines all over England and Western Europe, as there are many ancient sites there. While I was searching for info on them I've read something like "mostly people who are interested in thing like crop circles would believe in that" - the mystery of the ley lines. posted by mymla |

Quote: done by drunk college kids with a board and rope yup there are some that were made by people. but even that would require a team of at least 10 people, working a few hours, and being absolutely sober, because to reach at least approximately the precision of an authentic circle you have to work hard. Besides, how do you think they make them? By just putting the crops down (and the stem then breaks, right?) by force, no ther way if done by a human. Whereas circles considered as "authentic" have no broken plants whatsoever, their stems are all bent. How could a drunk college student do that? Quote: How could a drunk college student do that? Moreover, considering the amount of crop circles (more than 10000 since 1972) there would have to be a highly organized underground group that travels from wheat field to wheat field, form country to country. No sense in that. posted by knn |

Any group can say they did it. I did myself approx. 5000 of those 10000 circles. posted by knn |

I'd agree there are fake ones, but 10 000 is just too big a number for so many people to be workin at. There could be some method of bending the wheat without snappin it, but I'd still like to believe that some are authentic. posted by hungarian kid |

Quote: havnt you heard of that group they came out in the 80's and revealed themselves Yes true there were two such people, Doug and Dave, but: When confronted to provide evidence on certain claimed formations, Doug and Dave changed their story, even reversing previous claims; they could not even explain the unusual features found in the genuine phenomenon. When they claimed making all the formations around the English county of Hampshire, for example, it was pointed out that half the known formations had actually occured in another county – "Er, no, we didn't do those either," they replied. In the end, not even Doug and Dave knew which ones they had made. After them there were, of course, many others, but they never yet managed to produce a circle with bent stems. Quote: There could be some method of bending the wheat without snappin it The only approximate idea how the stems could be bent without breaking them is heating them very fast with something like microwaves. That could give a result close to what there is But that no one was able to do that yet as far as I know. posted by mymla |
