Can someone tell me the basic differences? Is it about "more movies here than there", "more music here than there"? Or is it about how the music industry can track you? posted by knn |

In my experience Kazaa is more for mp3's as getting anything large is a pain as everything is fake. Emule/donkey is good but slow sometimes, all links are verified though so very rarely is something fake and there are forums with sections to tell you what to avoid. It can be used for everything really, i use it to try games before i buy them. Bittorrent i'm trying to experiment with at the mo so cant comment I stopped using kazaa because it was rubbish basically and way before all the 'music industry is gonna bust your ass' stuff started happening. posted by Crossfade |

I currently use eDonkey, and have done for a couple of years now. There are plenty of people on the network and as stated, it's good for dodging fakes. It can be slow to get rarer stuff, but new stuff flies down as fast as my connection will handle. I imagine I'll continue using it until it stops being able to do what I want it to do. No point in trading in a system I'm currently happy with. But the Internet is a fickle thing and if the sources start to dry up and move elsewhere then a change may be in order. I tried eMule, but it insisted on creating dummy files for everything it downloaded - so upon starting a DVD, a 4.5 Gig empty file is created - and my disk space was gone in an instant. This can probably be disabled, but there were other issues. Since eDonkey is the base client for the system, more utilities support it. Connection speed and type might influence your choice, eDonkey is a server based system and some servers place restrictions on who can connect. If you can't get to the servers you can't search for stuff and you're reliant on share site links only. eDonkey's sister product overnet (which is included in edonkey) is very similar, but without the need to connect to servers. It takes a little longer for stuff to start off, but you're not subject to the whims of some server admin. I've not tried BitTorrent, but I hear it's popular - I understand there's a BT plugin for eDonkey, but as I said, I'm already gettin' what I want. Finally, one major reason to seriously consider eDonkey/eMule/Overnet over BitTorrent and other networks is this... (R.I.P. Sharereactor [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by Marl64 |

Crossfade: Marl, can you give me some tips on getting good speeds with emule, the settings are a bit ambiguous when it comes to knowing what they do. Here's my eDonkey settings (and a summary of downloads since I installed this version - 25 July) Hope it helps. The settings will vary depending on your connection type and speed. IMO Any protocol not eD2k or Bittorrent is a totally old school Napster wanna be and should be dropped.(well okay gnutella isn't but...well that's another story) eDonkey/eMule are better for more obscure older less popular content, because this stuff isn't often available on bt networks.(although it doesn't hurt to check btjunkie and see) Bittorrent is better for newer more popular things, if an album/movie/show is just out or its something popular(like a Beatles Discography or Season 5 of seinfeld) use bittorrent. If you have many ppl downloading the algorithm is just better than any of the other networks.(check wikipedia to see why) I recommend azureus for bittorrent cause it provides an interface like a more traditional fileshare. I use emule for eD2k but I hear edonkey is cool too. In the end I use both, but I prefer bittorrent just cause i feel so slick when I'm gettin' a pre-release movie @ 200kB/s posted by zosima |

Just to give a benchmark on bittorrent speed. I have standard comcast cable i-net and got 53.56 gb down and 28.41 gb up in 18 days and 6 hours not too shabby. posted by zosima |

I have removed all p2ps from my computer very recently. I was getting really tired of all the virus and spyware progs attempting to install themselves on my 'puter. I used to use quite a few of the sites, but now I just don't bother... I really don't trust any of them. posted by cathydee |

in my opinion the first thing i would install for p2p is peer guardian 2 (security) ...then i use ares, limewire, emule, edonkey, and torrents...limewire's search results are a bit flaky as you get many false matches...i like ares but cannot always find what i am looking for with it...emule and edonkey are way to slow...but can soetimes find what i am looking for with them...torrents are good but require more steps then the others (when i am looking for software i like torrents a lot)...but again peerguardian is the first thing i want if i am going to do any kind of p2p...security! ...security!...security! i might add that i would never use kazaa due to the malware/foistware issue...but i have heard of kazap that is claimed to be able to clean kazaa up ...i haven't tried it and haven't talked directly to anyone who has so take it with as many grains of salt as you wish (i know i do) i never said it but that is for windows ...i have no experience with macs and am just switching one of my machines over to run sabayon...my other machine is a dual boot xp/knoppix...if anyone has any advice specific to p2p on a linux machine the input would be appreciated mocoy posted by mocoy |
