 How can people trust a book that is filled with contradictions? For example, regarding Judas's death Matthew 27:5 reads: And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. While Acts 1:18 reads: Now this man obtained a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.  I know a lot of so called "inconsistencies" and all of them can be explained. Actually far more disturbing are the inconsistencies between different bible translations. posted by knn |

I know. And all these inconsistencies exist because every group translated it to fit their own interests. Pretty disturbing indeed. What's really going to bake your noodle  is: if God is perfect in every way, why did he let this happen? Why didn't he preserved his "word" exactly the way it was written? If he in fact inspired certain people to write the Bible, why didn't he "inspire" the people who translated it so that their translation would be correct?
And how can you say there are no inconsistencies? The one I posted above is just one example. In one book it says that Judas felt guilty about turning Jesus in to the Romans, so he returned the money they had given him and then went to hang himself. And on the other one it says that Judas bought a piece of land with the money he was given and he went there and fell on his head and all his bowels came out. Big inconsistency to me. posted by Echelon |

And I am argueing here as many before me: What is an important fact for Matthew (_hanging_) can be unimportant by others (_all his bowels gushed out_). Thus how did he die? He hanged himself and his bowels gushed out. Both is true. If a thief runs away and is hit by a car and decapitated you could say "rolled over by a machine" or "his body was separated from his head by the will of god". Both is an acceptible description. Circumcision is no contradiction, as I pointed out at IMO → Old Testament relevant for Christians? Eating shellfish OK? since the 10 commendments have been abolished/replaced in the new testament. posted by knn |

There are even bigger "contradictions" you haven't mentioned yet

And the fact that the God didn't do anything to prevent some discrepancies in translations and different texts is fine with me - he didn't prevent much worse things than some slight differences in texts. Besides, people trust the idea and the message, not some words  it's not science, it's literature. I think if somebody looong ago would have bothered to make the texts identical (or have made them identical by His will), it would now look even less trustable. For one, different people wrote them in the age when there were only news by the word of mouth, which made "slight" changes appear. Another thing is that for centuries they were re-written by hand. We should be greatful that we have only so many discrepancies.

Actually you could find more real discrepancies between the bible and concrete faiths. Where does the bible write something about popes? About Christmas? About the three holy kings? Nowhere. posted by knn |

What you say about people writing it so many years ago and then the re-writing by hand contributing to the discrepancies is absolutely true. It's totally acceptable, after all we are all human. But what's not acceptable is the fact that the Bible was supposed to be written by God himself. By divine inspiration so to speak. So, how can an omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient God write a book with so many flaws? posted by Echelon |
