»Old Literature«

Seems to have shaped our language till today, Shakespeare himself inventing new words (most commonly known 'bubbles') he had a vocabulary of 20 000, the average Oxford student has one of about 3 000.
This topic is mainly just to talk about old literature.

I recently read Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, not great. Some of the text really annoyed me. E.g. One sentence was ' I fear you' at the bottom of the page it had the meanings of sentences and words, for 'I fear you' it had 'I fear for you', hrmm two very different things.
It's not a very hard book to understand, but the story isn't very interesting and seems fairly biased towards Jews, the Jew (spoiler warning) in the story is forced to change his religion in the end, his character is very greedy and wants another merchant dead.
I don't recommend this book at all, the whole thing just seemed pointless and I was disappointed with the ending.

the older the better

I am not sure the thread title is appropriate, to me it sounds a bit degrading. I would prefer it to be "classical literature". Just a side remark.

Depends on why you chose to read Shakespear in the first place. It is not good as entertainment reading, but to understand where the whole modern literature comes from and how the English language became what it is it's quite good. I agree you may find them boring - as could be a lot of classics.

I liked "King Lear" better. And Julius Ceasar. Besides, Shakespeare is good for some great pieces of poetry.

Old literature that impressed me were Sophocle and Euclidis (not sure I spell them right), the ancient drama writers. So old and so good.

3 brilliant screen adaptations of Shakespeare

I liked the screen adaptation of "Macbeth" by Roman Polanski very much

and
"Othello" by Orson Welles'

and
Romeo and Juliet by "Franco Zeffirelli"

Franco Zeffirelli's "Hamlet" (with Mel Gibson) was OK too, although as far as I remember Mel sucked.

I would've liked to see Shakespeares plays back in the day. And it's great to see the English Language used so thoroughly, but there's debate to wether Shakespeare really wrote it all. Who ever wrote it was brilliant.

Exactly! I don't quite understand why it is so improtant who wrote it, as long as they are so good. But I guess there should be something rrreally important in the authorship.

yup. They were made to be staged and should probably be admired as such. Though people directing the plays usually nowadays add something of their own ideas which might screw it up a bit.

even too thoroughly to my taste sometimes Smile
there are huge Shakespearean dictionaries. They make English-English translations for some works that are bigger than the works themselves... because the language changed so much; like this

It has a lot to do with the history of the language, in this case for example I guess it is some remnants of the time when English had more cases and more complicated structure.

I often wonder if alot of the people that saw the plays could understand them. White laugh Cus that was around the time when people threw rotten tomatoes if they disliked it, and if he made words up aswell "WHAT THE funk IS BUBBLES?" White laugh

Heh, They're fairly small books, I'll read some more on the weekend after I'm finished getting shitfaced. Aaah, is there anything better than to post here and to drink something Set your George Michael free
