I don't know if anybody else has heard this... One of my mates from college has the lucky job of being a beta tester for the Matrix Online. He says it's pretty awesome except for one thing...all combat is turn-based. For those that don't know what that means, it means that MxO's combat will be like that seen in games like Final Fantasy and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Personally, I am quite dissapointed. In fact, I'm dissapointed enough to the point where I probably won't buy MxO now. What are your feelings on this? posted by GP |

I knew about this a few months ago on MeX, personaly i think it's the right move as being a beat 'em up fan i would whoop a lot of ass if combat was purely reflex orientated. that's unfair for the people who want to explore and have adventures, where's the fun if your going to get your ass kicked whenever you go outside? Plus you have the fact that split second reaction timing wont be good in real time over the net due to traffic so turn based seems the logical thing to do. It worked damn well in KOTOR and allowed for some nice gfx effects so i think Matrix:online will look great. posted by Crossfade |

Yes, I like this forum very much. I will probably post it a MeX as well, but I know there are many of us (myself included) that began on MeX and have now call IMO home. posted by GP |

GPieters: One of my mates from college has the lucky job of being a beta tester for the Matrix Online. Bastard I didn't qualify 'cos I'm a dirty foreigner GPieters: He says it's pretty awesome except for one thing...all combat is turn-based. I think "turn based" gives the wrong impression - it suggests that everything stops while you choose a move. It doesn't MxO is kid of half way between real-time and turn based. It's still real time in a way, during combat you choose a style of action - offensive, defensive, evasive etc. and the game selects appropriate moves based on your current selection. If you don't choose in the required time, it continues based on what your last choices were and what your character might do in response to the opponent's choice. So what happens is you decide how you want to act in the next move of the fight and the game selects the appropriate moves based your character and the opponent. Different people could choose the same style and the game may produce different moves based on who they are and who they are fighting. At least that is my understanding of the system. It has some major benefits; - It allows scripted fighting and move combos yet still gives some interaction - It allows the game to vary the moves made by the character, avoiding repetition and making the fight more fun for the observer. - It allows people to play without having to learn hundreds of possible fight moves - The fights better represent the actions of the character you portray without you having to stay "in character" when choosing moves. and the big one - It allows bullet time in a multiplayer game. I think it's the lesser of several evils and couldn't really be done any other way. posted by Marl64 |

I agree its probably the best way they could have done it, I've pre-ordered already, but no chance of a beta test unless you are a US or Canada resident posted by zesja |

I just read a great article about MxO on IGN.com. Aside from making me pumped to start playing this, I also came away w/the notion that having a clan or crew is going to be very important. Thus, I'm opening up the floor for anybody here at IMO that wants to start a crew w/me when MxO goes live. Nobody's on the line here, so if you had other plans, no worries. But, if you're interested...let me know. posted by GP |

i'm game...yet i don't think my computer can handle it from what i've read it's an open story the players get to make it as it goes. which means if you ever played online games there will be a bunch of dumbasses screwing around messing everything up, so it would be good to have us well edjumicated MEXers to balance then equation(damn see i gotta play!) i just got the 10 disc dvd matrix set for x-mas (HAHA) and they had a bigger preview on there than i've seen in the past. they said there will be 3 main factions, humans, machines, merv... and it said all try to recruit you to help them out. The interesting thing they also said was that each makes a pretty good case for why you should help them. 1. The machines try to convince you to not keep freeing humans so the matrix will not crash and both machines and humans can coexist in the matrix,(which is kinda what neo was shooting for right? i may be leaning that way if i play 2. the humans want to keep freeing more and more people,(which i think could be a bad thing, crashing matrix etc.) 3. and they didn't say what merv was up to...can't be good...(these people must be stopped at all cost IMHO) Another quote from the 10-disc dvd(i had to throw that in again) is that the wachowski bros basically gave them one rule to fallow with the story for the first year of online play... "PEACE...AND THE THINGS PEOPLE DO TO SCREW IT UP" so you know there will be people not playing for the right reasons, (i may sound like i'm taking this way too seriously posted by The ONEder Man |

But, if you're interested...let me know. Hahaaa, I might betray y'all and get World of Warcraft instead! I havn't gotten it yet because of MxO really, but if MxO costs too much or just doesn't reach my gaming expectations, I'm gonna get WoW instead! HAHAHAHAA, heh what are the 'recommended' specs? The things that makes me think that MxO won't be as good as WoW. 1. They say MxO will have a story, but everyone will develop their story and find all those secret characters and then it just won't be the same! 2. The battle system in MxO is apparently turnbased, the martial arts data system sounds cool but I'm not big on turnbased fighting, not when WoW has hacking and slashing! I asked a friend who just started playing, she reckons playing WoW is just playing Morrowind if Morrowind were an Online game! I havn't gotten WoW yet for two reasons, I'm a Matrix fan and don't wanna give up on MxO straight away and I don't have any money! posted by hungarian kid |
