»The beginning - big bang theory!«

Quote:
Some scientific equation maybe that just randomly burst into the big bang.

i read an article some time ago stating the big bang was the matter in the universe compacted in the size of an atom

here's a different one
Quote:
13.7 billion years ago, the entirety of our universe was compressed into the confines of an atomic nucleus. Known as a singularity, this is the moment before creation when space and time did not exist

this does not address the idea of where consciousness come from as posted eariler in the thread

Where from

1) They will change the theory in a few years. As they did in the recent years.

2) Where did that first compressed atom come from?

3) Where did that space come from?

good questions

1. yes theories change all the time...wikipedia has a list of problems and supporting statements both...

2.that is the mystery

3.apparently since the density was infinitely compressed and infinitely small there was no space...but in geometry does a point take up space or volume?

Big bang = Big prank?

2) Spirits

3) Bleh, I know this answer from science books, and they yet have to prove it. But these are cool theories, nevertheless Thumb Up Fun to think about

just to define

3.apparently since the density was infinitely compressed and infinitely small there was no space...but in geometry does a point take up space or volume?

Quote:
A spatial point is an entity with a location in space but no extent (volume, area or length). In geometry, a point therefore captures the notion of location; no further information is captured

so from that definition you could discern that finding the location of that "first" point might help provide insight...

i've also heard that a telescope has looked further into the universe(which also means further back in time) than ever before...i'll find it...the cool thing to think about with that is what if we could put a telescope far enough away from the earth that we could see the beginnings of life form...that would answer many questions too...but that telescope would have to be very far away...

Hey, you wanna see theories...

Quote:
The Theory of Hyperspace
According to Superstring theory, before the Big Bang, our cosmos was actually a perfect ten-dimensional universe, a world where interdimensional travel was possible. However, this ten-dimensional universe "cracked" in two, creating two separate universes: a four- and a six- dimensional universe. The universe in which we live was born in that cosmic cataclysm. Our four-dimensional universe expanded explosively, while our twin six-dimensional universe contracted violently, until it shrank to almost infinitesimal size. This would explain the origin of the Big Bang. If correct, this theory demonstrates that the rapid expansion of the universe was just a rather minor aftershock of a much greater cataclysmic event, the cracking of space and time itself. The energy that drives the observed expansion of the universe is then found in the collapse of ten-dimensional space and time. According to this theory, the distant stars and galaxies are receding from us at astronomical speeds because of the original collapse of ten-dimensional space and time.

This theory predicts that our universe still has a dwarf twin, a companion universe that has curled up into a small six-dimensional ball that is too small to be observed.

The superstring theory, being a completely finite theory, gives us deeper insight into the era before the Big Bang. The theory states that at the instant of creation, the universe was actually an internal linkinfinitesimal ten dimensional internal linkbubble. But this bubble (somewhat like a soap bubble) split into six- and four-dimensional bubbles. The six-dimensional universe suddenly collapsed, thereby expanding the four-dimensional universe into the standard Big Bang.

string theory for dummies

i was first gonna ask how could anyone invision what those other 6 dimentions might consist of but then i remembered an article in poular science that i read that broke string theory and brane theory down so us mere humans could understand..

if your interested at all i would vote for you reading the article, quite fascinating

ok for those not going to read it Not again first string theory
Quote:
Type of possible space #1: A 10-dimensional universe made up of the normal three dimensions of space, plus one of time, plus six-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds located at every point in normal three-dimensional space.

Excellent question #1: What the hell is a Calabi-Yau manifold?

Attempted answer #1: It is arguably impossible to imagine what a Calabi-Yau manifold is, because it has six dimensions. But let's try anyway. A Calabi-Yau manifold looks kind of like a balled-up piece of paper, except it's one whose curves and twists and turns are intricate and Möbius-like, looping back over and around themselves with clear disdain for Euclidean geometry. A Calabi-Yau manifold knows no straight lines. I try to imagine myself inside one of these manifolds: I think it's probably much like a fun house, mirrors everywhere deflecting your gaze in every which direction, so that at any time you could be looking straight ahead and see, for instance, your back. Except it's not quite that -- there are no mirrors in a Calabi-Yau manifold, there is only space itself. So while you can still look forward and see your back, you could also, theoretically, throw a baseball at it, only to feel the little missile smacking your spine two seconds later. That baseball might have traveled up and around, roller-coaster-like, through six dimensions, eventually ending up at your back. A Calabi-Yau manifold is a strange thing indeed.

(Actually, recent developments in string theory suggest that there may be yet another dimension, for a total of 11, and that this new extra dimension is invisible because it is "curled up" into an infinite number of tiny loops. But to avoid further brain pain, let's stick with 10.)

2nd brane theory
Quote:
Type of possible space #2: The universe as we know it is merely a three-dimensional brane suspended in a four-dimensional bulk.
Excellent question #2: What the hell is a brane?
Attempted answer #2: Here is the Powerpoint version of everything you need to know about branes:

· You live on a brane.
· A brane is like a membrane.
· Imagine the skin that forms on your soup when it gets cold. A brane is like that.
· A brane is some sort of lower-dimensional thing (the 2-D skin) sitting in a higher-dimensional space (your 3-D soup).
· Brane theory says our 3-D world is really just a brane.
· Our brane sits in a 4-D space called the bulk.
· Like so much congealed fat, we are prevented from escaping the brane and going into the higher-dimensional soup.
· Only gravity is allowed to do that.

now whats really gonna bake your noodle is when scientists try to combine all these theories into what is known as the "theory of everything" White laugh

you might wanna separate the 2 theories going on in here...there is enough info out there to have 2 good discussions about both...thanks!

During this creation and annihilation of particles the universe was undergoing a rate of expansion many times the speed of light

how do they explain this? i thought nothing could move faster than the speed of light?

That postulate is already in trouble. Many works suggest 'faster than light physics'

1) Maybe the speed of light was different then
2) I heard that nothing can be as fast a light. But is can be faster.

Magueijo, a portugese scientist suggests that light travelled much faster in the past, enabling forces to propagate more quickly. He is being clobbered by scientific community.
