You can't say you didn't see this coming. There have been more and more International players coming into the NBA, while the college ranks, where players develop and learn basic fundamentals are being raped by the all-mighty dollar. What does that lead to: A bunch of over-paid primadonnas that can't shoot from the perimeter, pass the rock, or play D. In other words, Team USA is showing exactly what the NBA is...A fucking joke.

Team USA

GPieters, team USA didn't lose because they don't know how to shoot, rebound, pass, or play D. I'm willing to bet that AI, Lebron, Carmello, and Wade would beat Puerto Rico's top player in a pure shooting and passing contest. There's no way anybody on Puerto Rico could keep up with Duncan in pure rebounding. The reason this team lost is because they are thrown together 2 weeks before competition begins. Plus they aren't assembled as a real "team". They just pick the top NBA players available and throw them together. Every team needs its role players, not a bunch of guys who think they're 'the man'.

Not the best Team USA.

Players don't appear too motivated.
Captian Iverson + Coach Brown => 76ers => Not good enough.

Sorry. Not going to agree w/you. It doesn't matter who would win in one-on-one matchups. If that was the case, yeah, we'd win by 50 every game. But due to the rules and regulations in intl. basketball, the zones and other D's that international teams play are completely different from those in the NBA. Therefore, any coach with a brain in his head will play a zone that takes away the inside from USA, their strongpoint. That forces them to shoot from the outside, where the guards and small forwards have to show they can hit the outside shot. They haven't.

Look at that team. Who among them is known as a good shooter from the perimeter. Iverson, career 31% from downtown. LeBron, 29%. Jefferson, 31%. Marbury, 32% and so forth. No one on the team was in the top 50 in 3-pt. percentage this season!

As for D, only Duncan made it to the all-defense team (2nd). The rest of these guys are like you said, "the Man" on their teams and can rely on others to pick it up defensively. More pressing though, is the fact that being "the Man," you rarely learn how to play team D, a must in intl. basketball.

I agree with you on this. But as I've pointed out above, it's only part of the problem. But I will conceed that 2 wks. in not ample time to put together a team comprising of primadonnas and ego-manics.

Again, another good point. But to be fair, some of the league's best players are not playing for Team USA. No Shaq, no Kobe, no McGrady, no Vince, no Garnett, etc.

they are still allstars

just because those uber stars are not there isn't much different then these uber stars...i agree with both posts above and i'm glad g to the p seems just as upset as i am...i do agree with this is not a "team" per say, but what about the last few olympics? they were still playin international ball and we destroyed them...ok just look at this stat...

i'm not quoting just going from memory but the first dream team averaged 115 points each game. this team including the exibitions? 80 something... now i'm not sure if the rest of the world has caught up to us basketball wise, or if it is the non team factor or if these guys aren't as good as dream team 1...

Easy explanation

1) The US basketball team is the self-proclaimed gold favorite
2) Puerto Rico is an underdog
3) They lost 73:92 (= clear loss)

The easy explanation: The US couldn't use the doping that they usually use in the US (because of the non-existing controls there).

This goes back to my original point. Yeah, these guys are still All-Stars, but it doesn't matter if you can't shoot from the perimeter. The previous "Dream Teams" had guys that could hit the outside shot.

In 2000: Ray Allen, Tim Hardaway, Allan Houston, & Steve Smith
In 1996: Penny Hardaway, Grant Hill, Reggie Miller, Mitch Richmond, & John Stockton
In 1992: Bird, Jordan, Magic, Chris Mullin, & Stockton

The 2004 team has NO outside threat other than Richard Jefferson and he's questionable at best. What's sad is that guys like Brent Barry, Fred Hoiberg, Michael Finley, or Keith Van Horn (all deadly from outside) don't make this team because USA Basketball is scared that they won't be able to sell their jerseys.

Good point

Seems like this team was put together to sell jerseys instead of winning games. There are a few reasons this team is getting whipped in international play. Hopefully some of the problems will get fixed. I really hate that they're losing, but maybe it will make them better next time around.

they can shoot!

the 3 point line is almost 2 feet closer! c'mon you tell me the percentage doesn't go up 2 feet closer? i'm sure those people hit 20' jumpers all the time... i have to think it's the zone messing them up...but they incorperated that in the nba a while back too...plus there are some guys just out of college and high school that couldn't have forgetten it already...could they? oh well i don't know the answer...

but my original idea and i also heard dicky V say, is that the team that won the nba championship during the olympic year would represent the u.s. and they get to pick i think it would be 3-4 other players to complete the roster... if this happened they could actually be called the world champs and not be lying!
