Actually, Jimmy Page is not a really good guitar player. Don't get me wrong, he's alright, but there are tons of better guitar players out there. He just happens to be in one of the greatest bands in history.

Great guitar player as in a great writer and a great player. He experimented alot with different instruments like banjos and in concert for some songs hed change the tuning of his guitar while he was playing it. One of the coolest things he ever did was a guitar solo with one of those things used to play a violin!

I revoted and added Tom Morello (big RATM fan) and Tony Iommi.
But where's Zack Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne), Eric Clapton (Cream), Joe Satriani and Jimi Hendrix? Set your George Michael free

The bottom line, reeeeally, how many of the can REALLY play the guitar, I mean really, when they are sober? Beyond cords and some helter skelter picking? If they can, they don’t need to.

Joe Satriani and Jimi Hendrix weren't in bands. They are/were solo artists. I know Jimi Hendrix was in the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but I don't think it qualifies as a band in the sense Metallica, Guns N' Roses or Audioslave are.

Nah Satriani has a band, him and Stu Hamm have been writing together for years. I think when two people write together consistently and play together consistently, that qualifies as a band. And sure Hendrix Experience does, it may have been based around him, but lots of bands have one or two people doing most of the work. Most of Metallica's songs are normally credited to being just written by James and Lars.

Aaaargh I can't believe the guy from Creed actually got a vote! And they got their start in my town too. They are Tallahassee's shame.
Thumb Down yuck

But I like Bill Frisell from Naked City. That's my pick.

The best guitarist I've seen live has to be Ingwe Malmsteen. A really arrogant, self centred prick, but one hell of a guitarist.

Yep -takes himself far too seriously - had a parody of his playing removed from You Tube Yesterday proving what a precious, pretentious idiot he is.

ZZ Top

Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is by far the best guitar player I've seen. As a side note, I've seen several of the bands that are listed in the tops including Aerosmith, Tool, Pantera, The Rolling Stones, etc. Gibbons is a phenomenal guitarist. Brad Paisley shouldn't be overlooked either, though he is country.
