sangu: thanks for expounding on that.
ah. so ok. so..agnosticism is the way to go? or at least the easy way out... Actually no... There might be a weak version of agnosticism which works in the way you are suggesting. I mean this in the sense that many people say they are agnostic with the misapprehension that it means "I don't really know much about God so I'll sit on the fence when discussing his existence". The normal stronger sense of the term agnosticism actually claims that it is impossible to know whether or not God exists (at very least 'impossible for them to know'). Therefore it does not matter whether God exists. Punishments or rewards for denial of acceptance of God would be ridiculous, especially if knowledge were impossible on this issue. Agnostics may perform religious rituals (going to Church, etc.) depending on whether or not they find it personally helpful to do so. They do not consider themselves to know whether or not those rituals actually have any real effects or significance. posted by fatpie42 |

Cavemen didn't have gods and were considered homo sapien.. we are considered homo sapien sapien and have gods.. cavemen evolved and because their brain involved and developed a system of greed, hate and tons of other emotions the evolved needed a scapegoat.. religion came about due to this scapegoat. If we reverted back to cavemen however and DID believe in a god.. we'd fear the shit outta it. We would also eventually fear everything else due to the stupidity reigning over the brain and would figure that god would smite us for doing anything. Humanities scape goat is a success.. but for how long? posted by Guest |

Guest: If we reverted back to cavemen however and DID believe in a god.. we'd fear the shit outta it What the hell? There's people like that now... Guest: Cavemen didn't have gods and were considered homo sapien. We don't know that. They could've believed the earth was their god. Guest: cavemen evolved and because their brain involved and developed a system of greed, hate and tons of other emotions Eh, again, we don't know that. They could've had those things before evolving (if evolution is how it all happened.) posted by hungarian kid |

I've been discriminated by some rather ignorant people...I have christian friends and they don't judge me or persecute me for my beliefs, it's the 'devout' athiests that cause the problems with me. Some dolt told me my pentacle was the Jewish Star of David and that I'm evil and I worship the devil. This is also an insult to Jews...Oh the ignorance...I've been to the local youth group many times and have never been told I'm 'worshipping the devil' Around here it's the athiests, they can't accept that people believe in stuff. And don't get me started on my family...mother told me magic was just 'hocus pocus' To me that's like telling a Christian that God doesn't exist. I may not practice magic but I believe in it. posted by ravenfeather |

ravenfeather: Around here it's the athiests, they can't accept that people believe in stuff. The biggest embarrassment for Christians is fundamentalists who are homophobic, sexist, and force religion down the throats of others. The biggest embarrassment for atheists is militant atheists who see anyone following a religion to be stupid, horribly deluded, and sometimes even as using religion as an excuse for horrible prejudices. I can understand why they are like this. They simply can't understand what the attraction of a religion is. The problem for more enlightened atheists is: (i) They give the example of atheists as arrogant and spiteful. Thus arises a stereotype in people's minds. (ii) They give religious people an excuse for their myth that if people just came to God with an open-heart he would show them what is best in life. I used to be Christian and I feel far more spiritually liberated as an atheist, but Christians don't think people like me can exist. I think the problem is on both sides. Fundamentalists give atheists ammunition because they are often closed-minded and dogmatic. Militant atheists give fundamentalists ammunition for the exact same reason! I think Christianity and any other religion are all acceptable spiritual goals. But no religious (or non-religious) view should be used as a tool for oppression and the religious should accept the place of atheism as an acceptable world view amongst the others. (Just like pagans we want to remove the stigma which often attached to our world view). posted by fatpie42 - still lazy |

I have been discriminated against for being atheist way too many times. As an atheist, I believe that people believe in "stuff". But when people believe in stuff that has no foundation or proof, how can I take them seriously? Why in the world should atheists pretend to think it's ok to believe in something that can not be proven? Just because most people do? If anyone can prove that God exists, most sane atheists will shut up and join the flock. The problem is that the words "prove it" creates bible quotes and long sermons about what God said and when. How can that be argued when you can't prove God existed? A militant atheist is one that does not understand that people are weak and should be expected to reach for hope. Religion offers everything from virgins to everlasting peace so why not hope, or have faith that it's all true? The truth is, you can't prove God exists. It's all based on having faith. posted by Danilo |

I am agnostic, so not religious per se - however I do get talked down to by religious people. And there's no need for that, I'm not Richard Dawkins! I don't belittle people based on their religion. It's how you act, not what you are that counts in my world. No need for folks to be hassled just because of the books they read, clothes they wear, and the things they do in their life that don't effect other people. posted by sam1986 |
