What about the development of the internet?

How about 100 million deaths 80 years ago who died because of the flu?

Pearl Harbor

Anomaly doesn't post here much anymore, so I doubt I can get him to add my choice: the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, December 7, 1941. I really think it is the central event of the Twentieth Century, and I hate that it had to be an surprise attack on the Americans that brought us into the war, but that's the way it happened.

It's one of those moments when the fate of so many nations and people hinge on a single mistake by an enemy, and the Japanese happened to be the ones who made that mistake, bringing the United States into the war and assuring not only an Allied victory in Europe, which also had a lot to do with the Soviet Union, but also Allied victory in the Pacific, which, with the rise of Asian economic giants, may eventually prove to be the most important victory in any war, ever. Of course, the victory seemed to lose a lot of its meaning not long afterward, due to the subsequent Communist victory in mainland China, stalemate in Korea, and later the Fall of Saigon to the Vietnamese Communists. Still, the beginnings of the Pacific War were the beginnings of the future, which almost never happened but for a crucial mistake by the enemy.

Oh yeah, and if anyone tells you that 9/11 was the new Pearl Harbor since more people died in 9/11, and since both Pearl Harbor and 9/11 brought America into a war, ask them where the al Qaeda Navy and Air Force are. They don't have any? Well Japan did, and defeating them was touch and go for a while there, even though we had a decent strategist for president then instead of our current mildly-retarded Texan ... Aaah, is there anything better than to post here and to drink something

Nuclear weapons. They redefined war as we know it, and they are still one of the greatest fears across the globe.
