I was at that airshow and there is no song in the world that can describe the human torment and suffering that occurred that day in August (28th), 1988. The sirens and the sounds of the helicopters went on day and night for nearly 5 straight days, the telephone system was so congested it shorted out, they had to commandeer private citizens pickups and vans to carry the burned and wounded to the nearest hospital, 7 kilometers away, people were very scared after the crash, every one was running around in a frenzy, looking for loved ones, friends, anyone they knew, the parked cars of the injured and deceased sat in the makeshift grass parking areas for many months, like a dog waiting for their master to come back, before they finally towed them off. I remember it too well, the grass near the control tower, where the solo plane hit the crowd was a brilliant shade of gree, much different than the rest, for years following, it may still be that color, we had gone to a concert the night before that airshow, "Monsters of Rock" in Schweinfurt and didn't get back to Ramstein until 6 that morning, because some girl from our bus tour had left with someone and didn't tell anyone from the bus, so we waited and called and waited. When we got to Ramstein early that morning, we stopped by her house to tell her mom we couldnt find her, she told us she was in bed sleeping. I had to go to the airshow @ 12 to work a concesion stand, I wish I had stayed in bed that day... posted by rob_in_austin |

True you have underestimated the impact of this crash. The media and the base officials are probably to be blamed but there are more people that I run into that knew someone involved or who was in Germany at the airshow, what a small world. I have been looking for information about the crash and it's victims. I found a site called and it haves many story of the victims and families. Makes us get together for memories and to say goodbye to the past. Many of the victims are still grieving after all the years. I was only four years old while my dad was stationed at Ramstein, AFB, but I remember the crash vividly. In particular, the soda can that my brother was holding in front of me as the plane went down and the fireball shot up. We were about 200 feet away, but the heat was intense. posted by Jackal858 |

roland...you don't have to have personally witnessed something to have it affect you emotionally or mentally. it's called empathy and compassion. posted by kobedog |
