 The U.S. government has finally started prosecuting spammers! I for one recieve hundreds of spam emails per week, and this is good news for me atleast.  posted by CustomerDisservice |

 Once one of these guys said, that on good days he sends 100 million spam emails. Geeee. Imagine if more would do it. Everyday I get approx 1000-2000 emails already. posted by knn |

I'm curious though, as to whether you have to sign up at a site in order to get spam. Or do the spammers just get your name from a database? posted by CustomerDisservice |

It goes like this: There are email harvesters (who spider the internet and the whois data) and spammers, who just buy these lists. One list can contain 100'000'000+ emails.  the key to not getting spam emails...don't sign up for anything on the one you use the most. i know i had a yahoo account and once i started signing up for various news letters and junk i got like 1000 emails a day. that's the one i use to this day if i sign up for something. i don't trust anyone in giving my eamil so not alot of people have the one i use for personal stuff. posted by Agent Zero |

What Agent Zero says is definitely correct: You NEED a separate email address just for sign-up stuff. You need another one when you buy a domain name. And never tell your email address on any www page. posted by knn |

"Show your email address" refers to the email button -> Show an "email button" in the memberlist or not. The email button itself doesn't lead to your email address but to a form. This way users can be emailed without harvesting email addresses.
