Alright, here's my problem! I had two harddrives and two cd drives plugged in, both harddrives were masters both the cd drives slaves. I broke my Burn-r, so I took it out to fix it, and I couldn't so I put in my DVD drive (which I only recently found out was a master) so because it was a master the extra harddrive wasn't working, so now I've tried using the Burn-r instead (only the tray is broken) but on the opening screen as it detects each drive, it gets to Sec. Master and just stops, doesn't report any errors or anything. And I don't know how to change drives from masters to slaves, I need advice on what I could do! Or have I stuffed my harddrive by trying to run it with another master? posted by hungarian kid |

You have to do it with jumpers = use your hans and take the tiny (usually black) jumpers and put them the other way round back. Set your HD's as Primary master and primary slave, set the CDdrives ar secondary master and secondary slave. problem solved. posted by Crossfade |

Thanks for the advice, but I always thought that if I tried to change the jumper I'd break something! Ha, big clumsy hands! But much appreciated, I'll give it a go! posted by hungarian kid |

Ok, so I plugged into a different computer by its self as a Master and then I got a message on the opening screen " Sec. Master blah blah - Something to do with ATAPI" and it won't work. What the fuck is ATAPI? posted by hungarian kid |

Atapi = ata = harddrive OK, I am simplifying here beyond belief, but that's what it basically means (for beginners) Any other Harddrives in that computer? Do you have set in the BIOS that other drives should be present? posted by knn |

Hrmm, maybe the bios has alot to do with it. Would putting in just one hard drive (with out XP or any system files on it) in a computer that's set for one harddrive, a slave burn-r and a master dvd drive make it come up with an ATAPI message? posted by hungarian kid |

Go to BIOS during start up (usually by pressing "delete" (not backspace)) and run the automatic hard drive scan. That will tell the PC how many drives to expect during next startup posted by knn |

knn: Atapi = ata = harddrive
OK, I am simplifying here beyond belief, but that's what it basically means (for beginners) Simplifying it beyond facts more like Atapi = AT Attachment Packet Interface - it talks to the IDE equipment. hungarian kid: I had two harddrives and two cd drives plugged in If you were running 4 devices before, there should be no problems with ATAPI and similarly your BIOS shouldn't need changing - most bioses will be set to autodetect drives. The first thing to do is make sure your hardware is set up right, so here's a few tips. Usually the motherboard has two IDE connectors, one for each channel these are called primary or channel 0 and secondary or channel 1, though may be labelled IDE1 and IDE2. Each IDE channel can have two devices, a Master and a Slave. A Dual IDE cable has three connectors, one for the motherboard and two for the drives. Although in theory you can connect the drives in either order, I've worked on systems where the Master HAD to be connected to the end (and no it wasn't cable select). Basic rules 1) Your system drive needs to be master device on the primary channel (the first IDE channel) This is the only constant in the equation. The hard disk with your operating system should be set to master and connected to channel 0. 2) Burners like to be seen to be important. A CD/DVD writer should be configured as Master and connected to the secondary channel. If you have a second burner, this should be connected as Slave on the primary channel. 3) The rest is a matter of filling the gaps. CD Readers and second hard disk go pretty much where you want but remember that each channel has a master and a slave, if both drives on one channel are set the same (master or slave) the system won't be able to detect either. hungarian kid: Sec. Master blah blah - Something to do with ATAPI" and it won't work. Of course this doesn't really help us much now does it? But I'll take a guess. hungarian kid: I plugged into a different computer by its self as a Master but the error you reported was something about "Secondary Master". This suggests that you have the drive configured correctly (Master), but connected to the wrong channel (Secondary). Finally, and this is VERY, VERY important... Never try to configure hard drives with a skinful of Ale. Not because you could damage anything (though you could) but because it takes a hell of a long time to get the jumpers back on with blurred vision posted by Marl64 |

Well this is the problem, I plugged it into both IDE channels and still got the Sec Master message. What's with that? Thanks for the plafora of information though, much appreciated! posted by hungarian kid |

Did you run a HD scan in your BIOS. You should run this or set to "Auto" in your bios posted by knn |

hungarian kid: Well this is the problem, I plugged it into both IDE channels and still got the Sec Master message. What's with that? Well the exact content of the error could help. But if you're sure you still got this error when there was nothing connected to the secondary channel then it suggests that it's reporting the absence of something on that channel. hungarian kid: " Sec. Master blah blah - Something to do with ATAPI" Could the "blah blah" have been "was not found" ? If that's the case it's possible what was on there before couldn't be autodetected (or your bios doesn't have an auto setting) and so the device parameters were forced. As knn suggested this is something you need to change in your bios. posted by Marl64 |
