I coudln't really find the appropriate forum for this, so i guess i'll just post it here. My question is simple. Do you believe that humans are innately good, or if left to our own devices (free of government, laws, and religion) we would turn into savage animals? I tend to call the latter option the "lord of the flies scenario". If you read the book you know that the shipwrecked children turn into monsters. I also think that it's true. I know it's nice and optimistic to think that humans are naturally good, but you have to ask yourself why you are "good"? It's because society has told you not to steal, religion has told you not to kill, and your parents have told you to wash your hands before you eat. If society and religion hadn't demonized stealing, then why would we have any reason to think stealing is bad? From where I sit, i don't think we would have any problems. My point is this: Our consciences were not present at birth, but were placed there by society. posted by CustomerDisservice |

Because it's bad when a guy takes suddenly YOUR things away Quote: My point is this: Our consciences were not present at birth, but were placed there by society. I guess you don't believe in past lives then. posted by knn |

I think that humans are instinctively selfish, which ties in closely with the human survival instinct. If you don't look out for yourself first and foremost, how are you going to survive? On the other hand, society/religion/etc. have taught us to control these impulses so that we can better function within their limits and benefit not only ourselves, but others. posted by northern_james |

on the nature of humanity sort of profiling.com/article.php?sid=289 my personal opinion is that without laws we would destroy ourselves...although i also think that it is those same laws that have allowed us the capability to create the means with which to destroy ourselves... what i mean is that the laws kept society stable enough for long enough to become technoligcally advanced...i believe that without that stablilty we would be at least 500 behind current technology... just look at the state that unstable countries get into... posted by the anomaly |
