»Matrix Title Sequence Test - Nowhere to put it at Mex«

Needed a project to try out some software so I made this.

To date when I've wanted a sample of "Matrix Rain Code", I've just grabbed a bit from one of the movies. Yeah, there's a gazillion screensavers that do this, but I wanted something I could customise and encode to video with little fuss.

So an excersie and to test out the software, I decided to try and create a title sequence from scratch. If it works out, you never know I might make a full movie White laugh

Anyway, this is my first test so a bit rough, but it was an opportunity to try some new ideas so I'm happy with how it worked out.

I used "Explained" as a temporary title as a homage to knn's other site, but sadly there's nowhere there to upload it. So I'm dumping it here.

Divx5.1 No audio
Running time 6 seconds

Software Used:

Corel Photopaint (editing bitmaps and creating masks)
Puremotion Editstudio (Video compositing and rendering)

Kinda, but it's not a stand alone app or anything, it's a video project - so is a series of bitmaps, videos and stuff all tied together through one app.

It's not too hard to do, here's the basics
(and no I'm not gonna teach you how to use the apps properly, just the techniques to get the effect)

Matrix Title Project Part 1 - Rain Characters
It's tempting to try to create strips of characters and animate them down the screen, but that's far too much work and is really hard to adjust things later.

The best approach is to use masks - kinda like a hole which allows you to see only a part of what's behind. The screen is always full of code but is's only revealed as the hold in the mask moves over it.

So the starting point is a grid of matrix characters. Initially I created a static grid (attached) to see how it looked, for the final one I used a simple animation so that characters change (just like the real thing).

The Rain effect is created with rectangles which move down the screen. These rectangles use a fountain fill to create the fade in / out effect. Where the rectangle is lighter, more shows through.

Creating this animation is the longest part of the process, but it only has to be done once and can be reused later.

The final effect is created by the video compositing app using a mask or Matte filter.

The filter needs to know three things;

a) What to use for the background - Black
b) What to use for the Foreground - The Character Grid Animation
c) What to use for the Mask - The Rain Mask Animation
