Yes, But not in the way most religions preach. No devine being, no long white beard, no fat bald guy and no indian bird with six arms. God is a finely tuned machine, the mechanism of the universe. It is us, we are it, we are one together (sorry slipped) There is no devine plan, but there is a devine purpose - to exist. No heaven, no hell, they are all metaphors for our state of being. knnknn: And what is the purpose? To gather knowledge? Of course if I said yes to this the next question would undoutedly be "And what will it doe with..." So if I must I'm gonna go with "To experience". Bill hicks used a nice analogy (I won't do the whole thing) "... and we are all one conciousness experiencing itself subjectively..." It's part of his "Why we never hear any good Drug related news" routine Does there have to be a purpose? What purpose does a blade of grass serve? What purpose has a raindrop? Does a rainbow actually have a purpose? posted by Marl64 |

Our purpose is to live and create but not destroy. Unfortunately we do destroy. Heaven and Hell are only created by people, e.g. some parts of London could be considered Hell. The term 'War is Hell' is more appropriate. Or maybe our purpose is to make good of what we have. Or maybe purpose is what we create for ourselves. If we are god, then we make our own purpose and our own heaven and hell. posted by hungarian kid |

Most people on this planet will never reach their full potential because there are so many hurdles to overcome and life is too hard. Or is it? Maybe this is gods grand design, survival of the fittest, the elite will inherit the earth? or will it just be the people who are capable of deciet and murder who will win the day? Gods plan is indeed wierd! posted by Crossfade |

Well if we are god and the majority of our leaders are corrupted, then in a sense gods grand design is full of lies and deceit. People need to start taking control and I mean GOOD people with beneficial goals for everyone. Even people in prison need some kind of benefit. e.g. There's a charity that gives prisoners the chance to train a guide dog hence giving them some sense of purpose. posted by hungarian kid |

You are talking about the perennial philosophy. The idea that 'All is One' is present in every faith system throughout the world, even after being systematically purged by the Roman Church by 'Inquisitors' like Torquemada... Carl Jung found it in dreams... Joseph Cambell discovered it in myth, and called the process of discovery the 'Hero's Journey.' Aristotle wrote about it; so did Plotinus. It is present in the Matrix movies. In ancient times, the Mystery schools taught the perennial philosophy, and it was kept secret. Why? Because they believed the masses were not ready for it. And they were right; when the early Christians learned the first half of the Mysteries (the myths) they took them literally, ignoring the perennial philosophy of the Gnostics, going even so far as to persecute and destroy the Gnostics, as well as anyone else who did not believe that their God was the only true God. The Vedas teaches: 'There is one truth; the sages speak of it by many names.' posted by annaerullo |

Great posts, marl64, annaerullo. All the practices, symbols, deities and myths are not to be taken literally. They are metaphors and are there to indicate something subtler. In Vedic traditions, they all point to Brahman (the all encompassing entity), the subtle truth that cannot be captured by mere words, symbols and concepts. In Vedanta, the enlightened one realizes - "Aham Brahmasmi" I am Brahman, the subtle, supreme truth. And, "Tatvamasi" - You too are that. posted by atharva |

"... and we are all one conciousness experiencing itself subjectively..." I have never read such a meaningless statement in all my life. Hence the fact that Hicks was suggesting that a person on acid would say it... As for God IS everything: There is a view whereby God is everything and it is called "pantheism". In this view God can be seen to be the sun and the moon and the sea and people worship each of these things. Another view is "panentheism". In this view God is not the same as everything, but is said to be 'within' everything. In all objects God is seen to exist potentially. We can experience God in all objects, but that does not mean that God IS those objects. I'd always wondered about it as a child. If God is omnipresent then he must consist of all objects. knnknn: Because whether getting toxicated/dying is a pleasure or not can be a point of view. So god can be toxic waste, prison, psychopharmaka, space. Everything is Relative. Try This... 1 - A Psychopathic Killer doesn't know that Killing is wrong. 2 - A Sociopathic Killer doesn't accept society's definition of wrong. 3 - An Executioner Kills because society says it's acceptable. 4 - A Soldier Kills to protect his society. But they all Kill, and the Bible says Killing is Wrong. How many of them are Evil? posted by Marl64 |

I would say none of them 1 and 2 are insane But maybe you could say that 3 is evil, I mean, you have to be pretty evil if you want to execute people. Also 3 could be insane. Not sure with 4...kinda depends on the war posted by Pawnatron |
