 i just an advert today for a new single episode drama to be aired on channel 4 very soon its known as "the hamburg cell" for those of you who know your recent history...you will remember that it was the hamburg cell of al qaeda that were responsible for the sept 11th attacks the drama takes the viewpoint of one of the members of the cell and shows how he is called up to do an important mission this mission as we all know is the attacks on the wtc it is channel 4's decision to use this perspective of the attacks that is proving to be controvertial i for one will be very interested to see if the drama uses ideas of martyrdom and if it portrays that acts as somewhat heroic of so then it may prove to be the most controvertial film for a long time...coupled with the lack of films showing the victims side of the story...it may be argued that channel 4 is "taking sides" on the debate about terror and is such encouraging it who knows...  posted by the anomaly |

none of you gave much of a fuck that this was on tonight but ill tell you about it anyway it centered mainly around 1 of the hijackers of september 11th...ziad jarrah...who was on board flight 93 that crashed in pennsilvania the chronology of the film began in 1996 when he went to study at the university in hamburg where he met mohammed atta among others involved in sept 11th as a typical "bad" muslim...he was materialistic and vanity driven.mostly due to his fathers insistence that he gain a phd and bring pride to his family he also met a non religious muslim girl while there and fell in love with her he was eventually convinved by other muslims to join a prayer group which over time began preaching hatred towards the west...it was through these actions that brought them to the attention of osama bin laden the film chartered them for a short period as they visited afghanistan and then back to germany... under the influence of his "mentors" ziad shunned his chosen career of dental medicine...instead chose a phd in aeronautical engineering...it was then at a flight school in berlin that he began the penultimate stage of training he was then ordered to florida to a flight school there by his superiors in his group but was not told the details of why...simply that he was to carry out a special mission "when people speak of you...they will speak of the men who changed the course of history" was the words that al queda chief of operations used for them he decieved his now wife by telling her that he was moving there to escape the fundamentalists it was at this point that the film took more of an anti american twist...the scenes were interspersed with dialogue from US official and actors playing CIA and FBI agents that told of imminent attacks and text was displayed of the screen with the continual messages such as "action taken:none" the climactic scenes of the film took another mood change...there was very little dialogue on the scenes showing the morning of sept 11th...these scenes were accompanied by fast paced asian sounding music...they were cut in with documentary news footage of the attacks which sort of threw out the time line as we got to see the attacks before the perpetrators got on the planes the final scene was ziad walking along the boarding platform and turning the corner to step onto the plane before fading into bright light the effect of the film was astonishing...taking the viewer through moods of anger...hatred...pity at the victims and ziads wife...horror of people reliving the attacks all in all it was a superb peice of film...even though the acting wasnt of a high standard but of course the main aspect of the film was the controvertial desicion to show the story from the hijackers point of view... i liked it alot and would recommend watching it if you johnny foreigners ever get the chance...although i feel that the americans among wont be given that chance for a good few years yet...you will have to make do with "the guys" with sigourny weaver posted by the anomaly |
