I think the law may be attempting to be based on morality, but I don't think it succeeds. I think the morality has to be there before the law and not the other way around. If you think that morality is encompassed fully by the law then good for you, but I will not accept this and for me morality is something seperate from laws. posted by fatpie42 |

fatpie42: I think the morality has to be there before the law and not the other way around. Absolutely. I'm sure it's been said before, legislation to enforce morality is closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. If there was more morality in the world, there would be a lot less abortions. posted by Marl64 |

If everything in laws were considered standards for morality, then it would be the end of the world. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

Quote: I think the law may be attempting to be based on morality, but I don't think it succeeds. I think the morality has to be there before the law and not the other way around. And it is before the law and after the law. In a totally sane society you would have high morality (no murdering, everyone goes to elections, ...) but no laws needed. Quote: If you think that morality is encompassed fully by the law No way. Lawyers are the rat tail of the society and the law system is totally suppressive. Everyone can sue you and harass you and ruin you. Even if you are innocent. But this is the abortion topic... posted by knn |

Quote: Everyone can sue you and harass you and ruin you. Even if you are innocent.
But this is the abortion topic... The previous sentence does go well with the abortion topic. You are innocent but they ruin you even before you can say anything about it. Quote: If there was more morality in the world, there would be a lot less abortions. I don't think the amount of abortions has that much to do with morality. I would say it has more to do with ignorance. Women don't get pregnant because they are immoral. On the contrary, if you take prostitutes, who are immoral by generally accepted beliefs, they seldom have to abort. Women get pregnant with a child they don't want because of ignorance, their own or their partner's. Listen, don't you think that there's a good way to solve the problem? Use contraceptives! And it concerns both parties. There are cases when women get pregnant and then abort because their unconditionally loved boyfriend couldn't have sex in a condom, (excuse me, he is a Man!) and didn't like the idea of her taking pills, and blah blah. Ignorance can be considered the source of the trouble here. And poverty if you wish - it seems people think that it costs less if they don't spend money on contraceptives, 'cause you don't necessarily get pregnant by an intercourse, and they just take a risk and in case something happens the woman will deal with it. posted by mymla |

speaking of condoms, I've never actually seen one before...not that I am extremely interested, but I'm a bit curious. Doesn't it try to prevent the semen/sperm from entering the woman? ... posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

But isn't it the purpose of the condom to do that? posted by nocturnal_anonymous |
