What are you people doing with a gig of storage on an email account?

1 gig is too small

It gets faster full than you think. Actually there was a test. Some guys signed up for an email account and used this email address everywhere they could (newsletters etc).

A few weeks later the account (1Gig) was full.

Right now I am getting approx. 1000-2000 spam mails daily. Go figure.

Ok, that seems excessive for a super, ridiculous power user, even more so for a standard user. Let's say that an email is 1KB. Even that is larger than alot of emails. Regardless, in order to fill the 1GB it would take 1 million sent/received emails at 1KB to total that. I have never even come close to 20,000 emails yet in my lifetime, maybe somewhere around 3 thousand or more.

Now if you are sending/receiving 200meg emails, then sure it fills up fast, but w/o attachments I find it hard to belive how a standard user needs 1 GB.

Hot damn! Isn't gmail supposed to be better at antispam? What did you do to get on that many spam lists?

What? No never not. I just checked my emails.

The average of my 600'000 emails is 5k.

You just need to get on one. Then they share your address everywhere.

ok, even at 5k that would take 200,000 emails to equal a gig. Minus spam/large file attachments, who is filling that up? And if that space is mostly getting filled w/ spam for alot of users, then what is the point of having that much space?

Why exclude?

Why do you exclude spam and large attachments?

Why do you exclude spam and large attachments?

Gmail is promoted having 1GB of space for you to use emailing and such. So therefore it seems reasonable that you want to assume you have all that space for your desired use. If you include spam for a large portion of that space, then that makes that much space that is taken useless since it isn't desired. Including large files is an obvious way to quickly take up a GB of space, so I am excluding that as a way of showing that it takes alot of emails alone to fill a GB. About 200,000 5kb emails to fill a GB. Now having all that space is cool, but what single person is approaching that limit with the exclusions specified?

As I understood it, one major reason to offer so much, was to kick Yahoo in the butt (Yahoo offered only 100MB)

that's what i have and am not nearly close to filling it up, it has a hell of a spam filter though which allows spam to go into a different in box which you can then view and see if it's worth keeping but does not count against your overall storage
