Honestly I would have put this in the last post, only I just thought of it... Why should reincarnation conflict with Christianity? Jesus never told us about bacteria, the movement of the planets, the shape of the globe, how to make television sets, etc. etc. etc. What good would it do to tell us that we had lived lives before our current one? How could it possibly help us to progress spiritually? Better to say: "You've just got this life to lead. Make it good!" posted by fatpie42 |

Past lives are not a side concept of life. If past lives exist, then they are THE major thing. Explanations, causes, goals... The concept of past lives changes everything. E-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. There is not even a slight mention of past lives in the bible. They not only play no role in the bible, they clash violently with some Christian concepts: If I have already lived, say, 123'446'457'433 years why should I accept Jesus as my saviour? What has he done for me? He just visited planet earth merely 2000 years ago. What sense would it make to be good? I have to live again anyway. What sense would it make to stay away from evil? Hitler dies and currently lives in, say, Iceland and plays golf. The whole concept of "Stay away from sin, because after you die, you cannot undo it" is nullified. If I am suffering this life time, because I sinned 100 life times ago, then how does Jesus help me if he doesn't even mention it? What sense does it make to pray to saints, if they died and are somewhere around here on earth. Maybe they are my neighbour? There are a lot of such conceptual clashes. Don't take my words for granted: The non-mention of the concept of past lives in the bible is the best proof, that they don't exist for Christians. The old priest who preaches in front of the audience would be devastated if you told him "See you in 20 years when you get that new female body"! What is he preaching for? If past lives exist, he isn't preaching the whole truth, yet hopes to go to heaven after he dies. posted by knn |

Per Christian believe there are no souls, except demons and angels and god. Thus if you die, leave your corpse and try to communicate something telepathically like "Hey, wow, look dear people at my funeral, I am still here and I am p*ssed that you bought that cheap coffin, although I wanted the nice black one" then Christianity protects you from starting to believe in "life-after-death" by stating that these are evil demons talking nonsense. posted by knn |

Um... why would you be the same person in any other sense than your soul? Why would you have gay urges in every life? Why would Christ's salvation not matter if you had lived in a prior life? Why do you expect Hitler to be equally evil in his next life as he was in his previous one (In buddhism and hinduism there is still a hell - but you only go there if you have a LOT of bad karma to pay off) I don't see how past lives would change one damn thing. Not from a pragmatic point of view anyway... posted by fatpie42 |

If being gay has something to do with you (= you are gay life after life), then what sense makes it to suffer for millions of years? It makes only sense if you say "I am gay, but god wants to test me and when I qualify I go to heaven after I die". Moreoever who guerantees you that you haven't been gay yourself, let's say 17 lives ago. With what right then are you preaching the bible's anti-gay statements now? You can't be even sure that you won't be gay next life. posted by knn |

There could be a concept that you live life after life until you live a good one and then you don't have to incarnate again. But this is definitely not the concept of the bible. And... where is the hell? The hell would consist of "having to live again". There could be another concept though: Living a limited amount of lives (one life as a rich guy, 1 life as a poor guy) and god judges you after, say, 120 lives. But that's not a Christian concept either posted by knn |

Maybe you don't understand karma knn... If you are reincarnated that doesn't mean that you do not get the punishment for wrongdoing. Wrongdoing is punished by a system of karma. If you are not punished for wrongdoings in your current life, your karma will catch up with you in the next life. The idea is that with each life there is a kind of subconscious spiritual development taking place. Also what was important about Christ was his death and not his resurrection. The resurrection was only so that he could prove to his followers what had been acheieved. Christ still died for you, no matter how many rebirths you have. Christ's death is important because he is God, not because he came back to life. posted by fatpie42 |

"Yeah, but is this (hell) a location or a condition? Maybe it's "hell" to forget your past live, or to lose all one's property life after life every 70 years or so. " Hell in Hinduism (much like hell in any other religion) is a realm of horrific torment and suffering. This location of horrific torment and suffering is on condition of having amassed bad karma or 'sin'. posted by fatpie42 |

Quote: Maybe you don't understand karma knn... I am not talking about karma at all. I am talking about how the idea of past lives has no place in Christianity. Quote: Christ still died for you So the Christians say. But where is the effect on past or future lives? Quote: Hell in Hinduism (much like hell in any other religion) is a realm If it's a condition you can be in, then we could already live in hell. Or consider this: A daughter dies. The priest is holding a speech "She was a good person. God took her home"... And then suddenly someone stands up and says "No way, she came back. It's the new born baby of my neighbour" A strange idea in Christianity isn't it? All the speeches about "God took her to heaven" would be nullified. posted by knn |

When a preist says "God took her to be with him" simply means that she is still alive in spirit waiting to be resurrected at the end of time. This does not conflict with reincarnation because she could quite easily be given another life here on earth before she comes to judgment at the end of time. Preists will only be embarrassed by an instance of someone remembering their past lives because the preists insist on not believing in past lives. This is no different from when a preist denies belief in aliens, evolution, ghosts, other gods. None of these really conflict with Christianity - preists just THINK they do... posted by fatpie42 |

Quote: When a preist says "God took her to be with him" simply means that she is still alive in spirit waiting to be resurrected at the end of time. Yeah, and it definitely doesn't mean that she's having a baby body now and crying as loud as she can in the hospital around the corner. Quote: This does not conflict with reincarnation because she could quite easily be given another life here on earth before she comes to judgment at the end of time. Hehe, show me the priest who would agree with that. I am not talking about hypothetical beliefs here (= What could be = How one could make Christianity fit with reincarnation). I am talking about the concrete beliefs of Christianity. Quote: This is no different from when a preist denies belief in aliens, evolution, ghosts, other gods. None of these really conflict with Christianity - preists just THINK they do... Christianity doesn't collide with aliens. The vatican has admitted that aliens might be very well possible. Other ghosts are possible too, in forms of angels and demons. Other gods are possible, too, as the devil is another god. Not THE god, just A god. Evolution could be made compatible, too, but considering how Darwin's evolution theory is fought in the US it's unlikely. However, reincarnation is the most unlikely to be fit into the concept of Christianity. Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. Christians believe in bodily resurrection. There is no body-to-body-birth. You know there was even a fight amongst Christians whether the resurrection takes place with the same MOLECULES that one had during this lifetime, or whether a NEW body will be formed at the time of the resurrection. Unless you show me a mainstream Christian belief system that believes that Jesus died for a higher purpose that affects our lives AND we live life after life, I will consider Christianity and Reincarnation as non-compatible. posted by knn |
