That's even funnier because one of my old housemates in college was from Ireland and took drunkeness to a whole new "echelon." Now when my mates and I get drunk, we say we're "talkin' Irish!" White laugh

Americans sound stuck up all the time. There are tons of arrogant americans out there.

I'm interested as to how and where you acquired the knowledge to make such a blanket statement. What the...?

It's not a 'blanket statement'! There ARE tons of arrogant americans out there - doesn't mean that all americans are arrogant or even that most americans are arrogant. It just means that there are a large enough number for me to have bumped into several.

I like them both. I rarely hear British English, except on movies and this one kid in school, but it's still cool.

However, I, like anomaly, hate the "like whatever" type of things. Even though I've started picking up on the "like" part. White laugh It's hard when everyone around you is saying "like sometimes" "like you know"...etc... Not again

  "NO CAPES!"

I like both

variants of English, or both languages, whatever.
But I prefer Birtish English. Though I wouldn't call it "Oxford". There are a lot of varieties, dialects and accents. The language that is spoken on TV was referred to at my University as The RP, received pronunciation. Like a dialect everybody understands and a dialect educated people speak. Well, I don't really know whether it still exists. For example thay say that RP was spoken on BBC, but that recently they allow dialects.

American English is probably easier. It's more lax as far as pronunciation is concerned. I never quite learned to pronounce [a:] in dance and [o:] and a couple of others. American English doesn't bother, just say [ae].

There's way too many variations on! Australia alone has about 20 different accents! What the...?

"Crikey that's alot!" "Fullyy!" "Fuckin oath!" "Yep!" White laugh

or ebonics english?

like others have said, even in american english you have all sorts fo accents and slang. you guys should hear my sister talk, and she isnt even that bad. shes in californai right now and has been for a couple of years, she says that people make fun of her accent all the time.

i grew up in a large city and don't really think i have an accent...i have a friend in canada that says that i don't sound like a texan until im around my friends...then a slight accent will come out I learned something new, I guess

but since working at a place where i talk to a lot of people on the phone...a lot of not so smart people...i get to hear some really BAD accents...sometimes i don't even know what people are saying. i mainly get to hear really bad deep south-ish accents...either really fast (like that guy from »King of the Hill« ) or reeeeaally slow-like.

i also get some ebonics type speakers...i had a 10 minute conversation with a woman just because i was trying to figure out what the hell she was talking about...she told me, "yeeh, *smack* i went and got one-o-dem phone cards and stuck it in my cumperder" i asked her, why the hell would you stick a phone card in your computer? she told me she was asposed to. i had to just tell her that i have no idea what she is talking about...so she stops and laughs at me and says, CARD, PHONE CARD, you know, like the WIRE that runs to the wall..."OH! you mean phone CORD"...
