Anyone heard of this book? It's got some amazing theological ideas and I am fascinated by it. Not least of these is its explanation of the rain dance. Most magic is based on imitating the effects it intends to produce. The most obvious example of this is the voodoo doll. You make an imitation of the person you wish to hurt and that use the doll to imitate what you wish done to that person in the hopes of transferring the expected pains to them. In the rain dance the imitation can involve someone with a drum imitating the thunder, a person with flint imitating the lightening and a person with a wet branch imitating the drops of rain. In another case some people cut their arms and then the sprays of blood as they move their arms imitate the rain. In another case a chariot is driven (noise of chariot = thunder) and torches are thrown either side of it as it drives along (lightening). In one case, strangers appearing in the town are thrown into the river to produce rain (the idea being that they are spirits). For the link Fatty. Will try to read it as soon as I'm done with a certain book that you seem to hate. On another thing, they seem to have some very interesting books on history and religion worth reading. Great site! posted by Echelon |

Quote: What does google page rank 8 mean? *CoNfUsEd* Google measures the value of single URLs with mathematical algorithms called PageRank (= rank of the page). The higher the better. 3-4 is the average. 5 is 10x more valuable then 4 6 is 10x more valuable then 5 7 is 10x more valuable then 6 8 is 10x more valuable then 7 9 is 10x more valuable then 8 10 is god microsoft.com has 10 for example, as has adobe.com. Paypal.com has 8. posted by knn |

No one really seems that interested in what I've said about this book so far, but fortunately I've left the best til last. Here's something is gonna bake yer noodle Y'know the great God Zeus of the Ancient Greeks right? Anyone here know that he had a grave? Even Apollo is said to have a grave with an epitaph written by the great mathematician Pythagoras! "According to one account, Apollo himself was buried at Delphi; for Pythagoras is said to have carved an inscription on his tomb, setting forth how the god had been killed by the python and buried under the tripod." Here's an especially crazy one: "Thus the Greenlanders believed that a wind could kill their most powerful god, and that he would certainly die if he touched a dog." Check it out! posted by fatpie42 |

What has this got to do with aliens, knn? I am not sure what you are getting at. posted by fatpie42 |

Quote: What has this got to do with aliens, knn? If Zeus has a grave then Zeus was maybe just an alien. Imagine Europeans reaching an underdeveloped planet. They would be considered gods. Just as mentioned at IMO → Why does god need a spaceship? posted by knn |

Quote: That's strange...I thought gods were immortal. 1) Says who? 2) Well, there are different kind of aliens. Ones are "The Greys" who use artificial bodies ("dolls") and swap them when needed. Thus they can "die" in the sense of leaving their artificial body (because it's too damaged or so) behind. posted by knn |
