As you may know the official language in the Vatican is Latin (not school Latin, but school Latin with some changes). However this creates a problem: You have to invent words to keep up with the world. Inventions like computer, car and internet are obviously non-existing in the original language of the Romans. So there is a papal institution called "Latinitas" that has "invented" 15'000 terms so far. Blue Jeans - bracae linteae caeruleae Hot Pants - brevissimae bracae femineae Idiot - homo hebes (whaaa? no original word for that?) Terrorist - tromocrates Flirt - amor levis Miniskirt - tunicula minima punk - punkianae catervae assecla cigarette- fistula nicotiana Pizza - placenta compressa Although British classicists yesterday dismissed the updated translations as "naff" and "subjective", the authors of the lexicon insist that they are promoting the use of Latin "for the entire world"
... "The problem with this is that it's very subjective. You or I could go away and produce our own Latin words for 'atom bomb' or 'motorway' and we could end up with entirely different results." Mr Fallows acknowledged, however, that the Vatican translation for hot pants was particularly admirable. posted by knn |

I wonder what the word is for "Xbox"! That would be a tough one to Latinize because of the sounds and the concept. knn: Does anyone have other examples? When gunpowder was invented, they used a Latin word for it, "bombardum," which must be made up since gunpowder was unknown to the ancients. I learned the word from a Latin poem by John Milton that I read in translation for a college course. posted by MindSlave |
