I think this is a tactical move by Bush. Killing Saddam would make a Martar of him, Jailing him could be a mistake as loyalties change - look what happened to Nelson Mandella. But it's also a good idea as damage limitation for the future. A lot of people already feel the invasion was unjust. If this idea ever becomes popular in the U.S, it would make a mockery of any U.S. trial resulting from it (In an unjust invasion, the capture of Saddam could be seen as the kidnapping of a head of state). By getting the Iraq people to do the dirty work, any future embarrasment over the reasons for the invasion would be countered by the response "Yes we made mistakes, but at the end of the day, Saddam was tried by his own people". And while we're looking at hypotheticals. What would happen if... Control is handed back to Iraq Saddam is Returned to Iraq for Trial Saddam goes on trial Saddam is found not guilty or bargains it down to "justifiable Genocide" Through a strange quirk of Democracy, the Tirant gets back into power Would the U.S. Intervene again? posted by Marl64 |

The people of Iraq know that he wasn't a good leader. They may not be keen on the Americans but they weren't happy with Saddam either. America should be prepared to let Saddam be judged by the new Iraqi democracy. It would be a sign of good faith and trust in the new democracy they, themselves, have set up. posted by fatpie42 |

If we handed Saddam over to the new Iraqi government, he would be freed by his numerous fanatics faster than France could surrender. That government is still to unstable to handle that kind of mayhem that would break out. posted by liberal slayer |

He wouldn't be freed. He is going to be found guilty and executed. It is best if we let the new Iraqi administration do the trial. If we don't then we are showing no faith in the American 'regime change'. If regime changes are bad then America should stop doing them! posted by fatpie42 |

You don't send a straight man into france and you don't give a captured dictator back to his people a year later. He still has a lot of crazy support there and they WILL do anything they can to free him. It would be crazy. posted by liberal slayer |
