Hard accusations: The US is going down Quote: The best basketball team in the world is now Argentina.
The best baseball hitter is Ichiro Suzuki (Japan). The top golfers are Vijay Singh (Fiji) and Annika Sorenstam (Sweden). The top-ranked tennis players are Roger Federer (Switzerland) and Justine Henin-Hardenne (Belgium). The WBC heavyweight champion of the world with Lennox Lewis (England) gone is Vitali Klitchko (Ukraine). I forget ... didn't we used to be good in these sports? Maybe it has to do with enhanced doping tests! posted by knn |

It's a case of america has been at the forefront of sport for so long and only now are other countries begining to spend the sort of money the states does on facilities and training programs for athletes. posted by Crossfade |

Crossfade: only now are other countries begining to spend the sort of money the states does on facilities and training programs for athletes. Although this might be true, countries like Argentina, Russia, Ukraine, and Puerto Rico (which defeated the USA "Dream Team" at this year's Olympics) don't have money to spend on athletes and sport programs. And yet, their athletes are doing good. So I think it's more a matter of hard work and determination by these athletes. posted by Echelon |

You nailed it CF. It is not the case that the U.S. is getting worse at sports. It just that the rest of the world has caught up. I absolutely hate the attitude the U.S. sporting community has towards this topic. The majority feel that because other nations are producing champions there must be one conclusion...the U.S. is getting worse at sports. How fucking moronic is that? It's like they don't think that other countries can't produce good athletes. Grrr. Drives me up the wall. posted by GP |

the anomaly: are played all over the world by huge numbers of people...hence they can have legitimate world championships Hey, man. I noticed you seem to be hung up on the "World Champion" label applied to so many U.S. sports. Personally, I think it's pointless as well but I think I've figured out why the leagues do this: The U.S. (being its typical egotisical self) seems to think that because the best players in world come to play in our leagues (excluding "soccer) and make up teams comprised of the best players from around the world, that justifies a "world championship." Which makes no sense really as Real Madrid or Man. U could make the same claim but don't. posted by GP |
