Scheme is taught so that we can understand the basics of programming. I've never ever done any type of programming before, and if Scheme is considered "Easy", I don't know how I would survive a Computer Science 1A class that taught another type of computer language that is, according to knn, "useful". And mind you, I'm planning on taking AP Computer Science next year, so I better get an A in this current class. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

Wasn't this one of the reasons they invented Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code? (or is it no longer fasionable or cool posted by Marl64 |

The power of advanced languages is that ADDITIONALLY to the easy stuff they have also advanced stuff. If Scheme is easy then this is maybe just another word for unusable. Let me show you php (a highly popular language):
There is NOTHING hard about that. Just the terms are a bit different (instead of "define" you use "function"). It's totally easy, but guess what... this forum here is written in PHP. THAT's the language that should be taught. posted by knn |

Was php based on Perl then? The structure could be any of the C/Java type languages but the variable syntax looks like Perl posted by Marl64 |

C languages are OK. I don't like them but if nocturnal_anonymous would tell me "Our teacher is teaching C" then I would say "Very well" But this Scheme nonsense (there are other languages equally bad. Just developed for schools. No use in the wild. Just in vitro. And they claim you learn for life) posted by knn |

PHP succeeds an older product, named PHP/FI. PHP/FI was created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995, initially as a simple set of Perl scripts for tracking accesses to his online resume. He named this set of scripts 'Personal Home Page Tools'. posted by Marl64 |

Quote: But this Scheme nonsense (there are other languages equally bad. Just developed for schools. No use in the wild. Just in vitro. And they claim you learn for life) Yes, I guess you could say that they are teaching Dr. Scheme just for school, but that is because we are trying to grasp the CONCEPT of programming. Like I've said before, we're going to learn Java next semester, and if I take AP Computer Science next year, then I'm sure he'll teach us some more "useful" languages. After all, it is an AP class. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

Quote: but that is because we are trying to grasp the CONCEPT of programming. Nope. That is what your teacher SAYS. I have heard this argument for years and I consider it as plain wrong. No Bill Gates has ever learned Scheme to start his imperium. It's like learning letters before one can talk, just to get the CONCEPT of language. It's just a wrong attitude and pretty much exactly what's wrong with school systems: Not learning for later application. posted by knn |
