Agent Zero: Smartarse... ? its smartass you aussies spell stuff weird! Smart Ass - Is that some kind of Brainy Mule? You only find the spelling weird because it's correct. Curious as to why? Years ago, discipline in British Homes and Schools was different - ie there was some. Children were often punished for using profanities which were seen as "adult words". Kids thinking they were clever, found a way 'round this by substituting other words but using them in the original context. This lead to stuff like; Ass instead of Arse Barstool instead of B*stard Fork (or Fudge) instead of F*ck etc. So while profanities like "fork you, you barstool" and (of course) "Smart Ass" were still understood, the kids got away with it because they never actually used the "bad" words. Of course some parents resorted to "It's not what you say that makes it a profanity, it's what you mean". posted by Marl64 |

But for the first years of the war, the U.S. refused to get involved, they saw Hitler as "Europe's problem" The U.S. was a military supplier to Great Britain, however they held off delivery of (paid for) vital weapons and equipment (particularly aircraft) in order to remain neutral. This alone almost cost Britain the War. Had it not been for Russia (forcing Hitler to fight on two fronts), Britain wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. And it took a direct attack to help the U.S. to develop a concience and decide to help their good friends and allies. Out of this relationship a saying was born; "America was late to the first two world wars, so it's gonna make damned sure it's the first there for the third". Also, it is often said that it was Japan that brought America into the second world war, when in fact it was the other way around. posted by Marl64 |
