Well, its really called 'rounders', and like someone said, its usually played by schoolgirls. So, to sum up, rounders/baseball is played by americans and english schoolgirls...what was that about attention spans? You only have to watch american TV to draw conclusinos about americans and attention spans

well its true..

here are some minor examples..

Baseball:
-Smaller field, diamond is setup in a 90 degree angle+plus the fences.
-Length of the game is around 2-3 hrs.
-Batters only have 2 maybe 3 different kinds of swings, check swings or pulls or drive(slugs), not including bunts.
-Pitching only requires aim and strength(and Forgods SAKE they are THROWING! lol).
-Only 8 primary fielding positions.

Cricket:
-Cricket PITCH or Batting Track(BIGGEST DIFFERENCE - as every pitch is different as some are more friendly to batters, some to bowlers, weather can drastically change how the pitch will react before the game i.e, moisture, due. so cointoss also becomes even more crucial..for the captain to decide weather to Bat or Field.
- Other huge difference is that its a 360 degree field(more playing surface area).
-Length of the game varies(Test- 5 days, One Day7-9 hrs, 20/twenty- 2 to 3 hrs).
-Batsmen have to master 10-30 different types of shots.
-Bowlers(pitchers) have to BOWL overarm, ps they have to vary the length and the angle of the ball (trust me when your not Chucking it(throwing it) its ALOT DIFFICULT!.
-There are 30+ different fielding positions.
-And almost 10 different ways to get a batsman Out.

ps strategically its alot more complex than trying a simple "bunt squeeze in baseball or a hit n run to advance the runners" lol

if none of that made any "sense" to u! it means that ur a true baseball fan. Wink

Pitching

The fact that a baseball pitcher is not allowed to "bounce" the ball off the playing field while delivering a pitch does not mean that pitching is less difficult than bowling. Or batting, for that matter, to – whatever the hell you call swinging one of those table leg Cricket bats.

The very best baseball pitchers are utter masters of subtlties unknown to cricket bowlers. They're also serving up pitches to better, smarter batters wielding a smaller, lighter, rounder bat that makes the striking surface of a cricket bat look like the broad side of a barn – oh yeah, also across a plate six inches across AND within the strike zone.

You can argue for the strategy and nuance of any game, but when it comes down to this argument, look at the physical facts.

Besides...really...any top-flight cricket bowler against any Major or Minor League lineup – baseball rules – is crushed in an onslaught. If he can even throw strikes. With practice, he might be able to avoid being pulled before recording an out.

Better..smarter... how do you know they are better or smarter?

And of course a cricket bowler vs a baseball team is going to win at Baseball... just like a baseball team would lose to a cricket team at cricket. What pointless arguments.

I am going to assume you know little about cricket, which is fine I know little about baseball. But I will defend cricket because I love it.

So many baseball lovers refer to their smaller bats saying how much harder it is to play. Yes it is harder to hit a baseball, I find it quite amazing you can hit a ball at all with a baseball bat. But cricket is a far higher scoring game than baseball, and is designed as such. It would not make cricket better if it were harder to score, would it make baseball better if it were easier? Personally I think it would, but I don't know baseball that well so my opinion on the matter is invalid.

I think cricket is better, but I would, I'm Australian. To me baseball is just cricket but not as good. I dare say you feel the same way about cricket. So who is right? Certainly not me, and certainly not you. Passion I fear is what drives this debate, not objectivity.

I'd like to clear up that baseball is not a simple sport for people with short attention spans. I don't know about cricket because when baseball isn't on I turn to American football. I also watch golf and tennis so I don't just watch American sports.

Now a few facts about baseball:
1. The gloves on the players hand is so that they don't break them, trust me, I broke a bone in my hand a while ago catching a baseball hit for a line drive barehanded... dumb idea.
2. There are many windups and pitches. Pitching variations change from pitcher to pitcher. There are even variations on certain types of pitches, Chris Carpenter has about 4 different types of curveballs that he throws, the most prominent being a 12-6 curveball that just falls over the plate. Pitchers have to pitch in 3 different dimensions, height, distance from the batter, and speed. In short people don't understand that pitchers have to thik about alot of things.
3. Hitting the ball at all is not all that easy. You need to be able to hold the bat while hitting it, swing at the right time, swing in the right place, and hit it where the defensive players cannot get it.
4. Once on base a player needs to know what to do and when to do it, otherwise you'll be out. Many players, such as Jose Reyes, need to know when a pitcher will throw certain pitches and how strong the catcher is so as to not get picked off, then the defense has to be fast enough to make the play so even if the throw is on time three people have to come together perfectly to get one out.
5. As to baseball being called rounders... There is definitely a difference there, I have never seen rounders but it must be different from baseball
6. hitting homeruns is not just random, Alex Rodrgiuez hit somewhere around40-55 homeruns this year (don't really follow the Yankees so I forget the number) that takes skill to hit homeruns consistently. It could be a fluke like when Luis Castillo hit a home run this year in the huge RFK park but its not a fluke when it is consistent.
7. A baseball game can go on indefinitely the longest one in history was somewhere around 20 innings and was called off due to the dark in the early 1900s.
8. Last one, I promise. Playing 162 baseball games a year with breaks once a week only takes some athletic skill, while some people, like miguel Cabrera and Antonio alfonseca, are fat, most are fit and just have a thing called muscles on their body adding bulk to their body.

I played cricket as a kid and for many years before playing my first game of baseball in my mid 40's. Became an accredited baseball coach, coaching kids, around that time.
I M O one cannot fairly compare the games - both have their specialised skills. However, I will point out that the Australian cricket team, ranked #1 in the world, have, for many years employed baseball coaches especially for their fielding.
Around ten years ago the then national baseball coach (an American) who took the Aussie team to Atlanta Olympics, was hired by Cricket Australia and his influence is there to see. Australia is easily the most skilled fielding team in all forms of world cricket.
Would also point out that when you attend a cricket game - especially a one day limited overs game, the players warm up on field using baseball gloves and skills / drills. You won't see baseball players warming up employing cricket skills !.
And for the comment re how easy it is to hit one outa the park. Just imagine how much easier this would be if the hitters used the wider flat bladed cricket bat often weighing more than a wooden baseball bat. Hitting a baseball on the sweet spot of the baseball bat is infinitely more difficult.
And finally, I understand that both games are derivatives of rounders but how far back does one go because drawings on Egyptian pyramids depict stick / ball games.

GP:

no, i know baseball hard ive played it but in cricket theres 8 types of pace bowlers and 5 types of spin bowlers with different areas to bounce, one of the hardest things about batting in cricket is to acknowledge where the ball is going to bounce and how it will bounce.
also in cricket you get one chance to hit the ball not three, and to be childish i have to say it (swap the sports)any baseball player who played cricket not even proffessional with expert advice wouldnt have a chance they would get so confused about the bounce.

[quote="GP"]What? I'm sorry, but you just don't know what you're saying here. Variations in throwing styles? There's at least 12 different arm angles that guys throw pitches at not to mention about 10 different pitches to throw. Hitting styles? Besides different crouches and postions in the batter's box, there's also different types of swings and swing strengths]/quote] no, i know baseball hard ive played it but in cricket theres 8 types of pace bowlers and 5 types of spin bowlers with different areas to bounce, one of the hardest things about batting in cricket is to acknowledge where the ball is going to bounce and how it will bounce.
