Quote: If being American is the reason to support your president Today CNN showed an interesting poll: 42% of all American consider themselves as Evangelican & Reborn Christians. 42%! 42%! 42%! That's a freaking theocracy, for heaven's sake! Like Iran! ((OK, not that bad, but you get the point)) And as I pointed out at IMO → Should the US split and form 2 independent countries? 90% of these 42% will ALWAYS vote for Bush. And WHY? Because he is against gay marriage or some nonsense like that. Some utterly non-important nonsense compared to an atomic war... Thus whatever Kerry says or does is irrelevant, because the Reborn Christians don't base their vote on importance, nor on consequences, nor on counter-facts. posted by knn |

The stats so far say that the win for Bush was a moral win for Bush (abortion, gays). Now if THAT is the reason then Kerry had no chance anyway and Bush is an Ayatollah. The polls show that the Christian/Value movements (anti-gay-marriage, stem cell research...) were THE single topic that made Bush the president. On other topics (Iraq, economy,...) Kerry was leading posted by knn |

The ONEder Man: are you speaking about the exit polls that showed morality as the #1 issue when voting? i don't know if i believe those...those are the same exit polls who showed kerry in the lead at the beginning of the night I watched the whole night and although there were some differences between exit polls and votes they weren't big enough to suggest any Kerry presidency. After all the lead was pretty small 51%:48% But I am talking here about huge differences (see graphics): A majority favours Kerry for everything but is outnumbered by the Christians who hate gay-marriages. Unbelievable that such an unimportant issue as "My neighbour is gay and married" is the switch... In other words: Had Kerry said: No gay-marriage, he would have won.. Quote: In other words: Had Kerry said: No gay-marriage, he would have won.. kerry did say no gay marriage Some folks like Kos are slamming Kerry for supporting civil unions but not gay marriage in Massachusetts.
Fair enough. but the cold reality is that if Kerry came out for gay marriage, he won't win in November. Period. So you can have a candidate who promotes gay marriage, or you can get Bush out of office. That's the choice. or you can tell people exactly what they wanna here and believe something completely different yourself just to win the election...btw they are both for civil unions which i agree with posted by The ONEder Man |

The word means 'sign of God', and those who carry the title are experts in Islamic sciences such as jurisprudence, ethics, philosophy and mysticism, and usually teach in schools (hawza) of Islamic sciences. i don't think you would say bush was an expert in anything knn, and surely not islamic sciences Quote: It's worse than I thought. The ONEder Man: kerry did say no gay marriage Kerry said so many things. It's about whom the voters THINK will handle moral values better. The ONEder Man: i don't think you would say bush was an expert in anything Sure, he is an expert in campaigning for example. This is the 3rd big one that he won... posted by knn |

As you know Bush won the popular vote by 3.5 million voters: Quote: "The question is," he said, "is who are those people? Who is coming out to vote who didn't come out to vote in 2000? A good chunk appears to be 4 million newly registered fundamentalist Christians."
The numbers suggest they favoured Bush by a 4-1 margin - and they came out in droves to vote for measures in 11 states banning gay marriage. posted by knn |

If 90% of Christians will always vote conservative why have we got a bloody neo-socialist government in my country now? I guess it shows that there aren't many Christians in Britain? posted by fatpie42 |

fatpie42: I guess it shows that there aren't many Christians in Britain? Actually I meant US Christians. While statistically a "Christian in Germany" is a "Christian in USA" is a "Christian in Africa" I am pretty sure that USA is different. Christians in Europe are more like "Yeah, we marry in the church because of the nice party" or something like that. Bible has no real value. posted by knn |

While statistically a "Christian in Germany" is a "Christian in USA" is a "Christian in Africa" I am pretty sure that USA is different. Which is also proven by the fact that US Christians vote Bush and I don't think that ALL Europe's Christians would be such "Bush followers" posted by knn |

Quote: Sure, he is an expert in campaigning I agree. Bush campaign bagged florida very well. Unusually large no of hispanic voters voted for him there. Also George P Bush was an impressive mascot for his uncle. Kerry is urbane. You need southern accent to get votes in middle and southern parts. The electoral map is very red there. Some coolness needs to be migrated there. posted by blueSky |

knn: Christians in Europe are more like "Yeah, we marry in the church because of the nice party" or something like that. Bible has no real value. I know a lot of Christians who would find that offensive. Christians find the Bible valuable wherever they live. They don't necessarily all think that it denies scientific progress (stem cell research) or that it justifies intolerance (refusing gay marriages) or that people have as many rights as God (God kills people so why can't we? Capital punishment). But even so, they still take the Bible to be extremely important. posted by fatpie42 |
