hungarian kid: Shianese Huh? knn: What is the same however is the WRITTEN language (= the Chinese characters). In other words: You go to a Chinese cinema and then you watch a Chinese-spoken movie (Cantonese) with Chinese subtitles (for everyone Chinese who cannot speak Cantonese) This is somewhat true. The theater part is correct... However, there are actually also two ways of writing Chinese. There's the traditional version and the simplified version. I only know the traditional version, since my family background is actually from Taiwan, not China. People in mainland China know how to write the simplified version, and some don't know the traditional way. Of course, it's better to learn both. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

nocturnal_anonymous: However, there are actually also two ways of writing Chinese. Like Japanese (Hiragana and Kanji). A few years ago they reformed their characters and now they have letters (Katakana) (additionally to the old type of writing = characters). Their Katakana letters look like on a spaceship by the way: posted by knn |

Must be very uncommon then, because I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Most people that know Chinese either know Mandarin or Cantonese. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

I would like to learn Japanese probably. By just clicking the fingers Languages of Europe all seem possible to learn and understand, they are kind of familiar. Japanese is so different... I don't know why I would've prefered it over Chinese though. The Japanese seem to have some kind of meaning for me, like something mysterious and important I should know Oh and I like their art and sceneries. Not so much the high-tech ones, like Tokyo, even though they are very impressive, but things like Kyoto. [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by mymla |

For me it would be Italian. Although I'm also interested in Dutch, German, and Danish. But that's probably only because I work in a Denmark based company. posted by Echelon |

knn: hungarian kid: Well there's alot of different chinese languages, those are just the main ones! Cantonese being spoken in the Hong Kong area and Mandarin being spoken through out China as either a first or second language. What is the same however is the WRITTEN language (= the Chinese characters). In other words: You go to a Chinese cinema and then you watch a Chinese-spoken movie (Cantonese) with Chinese subtitles (for everyone Chinese who cannot speak Cantonese) A lot of the Chinese characters are also present unmodified in Japanese. Japanese, or Nihongo, is what I took in college for my language requirement. Some phrases I remeber: "Nihongo o hanashimasu ka?" means "Do you speak Japanese?" "Nihonjin desu ka?" means "Are you a Japanese person?" I use that one a lot at Disneyworld to hit on the "Onna no hitotachi" or "girls". "Itadakimasu." Polite thing to say before you eat or drink. It means "I will respectfully receive [this food/drink]." "Onamae wa nan desu ka?" means "What is your name?" Okay, enough, this is like school. posted by holy_of_holies |

German, no other language, Because if I could speak German I copuld become a death metal singing sensation. Also it just sounds so cool and harsh. Last reason I could sing aloud to my favourite Rammstein songs. posted by Kupov |
