Doing some research on Satellite Broadband and I just wanted to see if anyone here knows the ins and outs. Back in the day you could get some decent download speeds, but you still had to have a basic 28.8+ modem in your computer in order to upload anything. This statement may be a bit outdated but I thought you needed a fairly large dish/lots of power into the dish in order to ul data. I mean standard satellite tv can only dl data, right? That's why they need the phone line hookup to ul data if needed. From the commercials I have seen on DirectTV, you don't need any extra hardware, so I assume you can ul and dl through the broadband dish. Please do tell if you have some good technical knowledge on this or have it yourself. posted by volonteshiva |

You CAN upload (and by upload I even mean "You click something" because the click needs to be transmitted somewhere) but it's very slow. Thus surfing makes no fun. Moreover uploading is not something that would be supported by every Sat dl provider. posted by knn |

...upload fast if you are willing to pay, a good service here(uk) will set you back £60 a month, for that you get unmetered upload/download, 30 times faster than adsl in most cases. The only downside to satellite apart from the price is meteorological interference, you shouldnt suffer from any more disconnections than adsl though so it's a mute point. posted by Crossfade |
