Agent Zero: The talk of a true man. What do you have to say now knn? Probably that he's got better speech writers now. And for the billionth time, it's not America! When are you going to learn that America is a fucking continent, not your country? But then again, you people elected a dumbass for president, so what can we expect, right? posted by Echelon |

look i am and american because i live in the uniteed states of AMERICA so AMERICA spoke. quit pokin at the small things and look at the bigger picture pal. i live in washington state unfortunatly it voted kerry and has not voted for a republican president in a very long time. i live near seattle. anyways BUSH won and i am happy. he won both things this time and i think the world needs to "wake up" as knn would put it. and realize that 51% is the most a president has gotten in a long time. clinton didn't have that much. posted by Agent Zero |

Echelon: And for the billionth time, it's not America! When are you going to learn that America is a fucking continent, not your country? But then again, you people elected a dumbass for president, so what can we expect, right? First, you can only blame 51ish% of us for electing a dumbass for president. Don't blame the other 49ish% of us. Secondly, America is not a continent. North America is a continent and South America is a continent. Americas refers to North, South, and Central America, and America can refer to any part of the Americas. Primarily, America refers to the United States of America, because it is an abbreviation of the name of the country. posted by Tiefling |

Tiefling: America refers to the United States of America, because it is an abbreviation of the name of the country. You wish Russia = USSR (although Russia is just a part of it) Holland = Netherlands (although Holland is just a part of it) Atlantis = Whole island (although Atlantis was just a town) And the reversed case: America = USA (although America is much more) posted by knn |

Agent Zero: i live in the uniteed states of AMERICA You emphasised the wrong word there, it should be United Stated OF America - meaning it's part of it. It's a bit like saying President of the USA - he belongs to it not he is it. And this should give you an idea how to abbreviate stuff, people say "Look it's the president" not "Look its the USA". Come to think of it, it's actually "The President of the United States of America" (so in computer terms America.UnitedStates.ThePresident So by your method of abbreviation, George Bush is The New "America" Agent Zero: quit pokin at the small things and look at the bigger picture pal. Ironically, America IS a big thing and you're only referring to the small picture Agent Zero: ...realize that 51% is the most a president has gotten in a long time. clinton didn't have that much. And given the run up to the election it is a tremendous victory - no-one can take that away from him. But it doesn't mean that everything he has done is suddenly OK. The mistakes he has made are still mistakes. The victory means only one thing - Of the people who expressed a preference, more want him to run the country. It doesn't mean they agree with him, only that they agree with him more than they do with Kerry. And that's the whole problem - limited choices Like, for example Quote: Do you want

marl64: You emphasised the wrong word there, it should be United Stated OF America - meaning it's part of it. Oh, so you're saying we should refer to our country as "Of," not as "America." Erhm... right. It cracks me up when people from another continent try to tell us how our idiomatic expressions are incorrect. Just imagine if I went to the UK (if I'm allowed to refer to it as such) and insisted that there was no way possible for Barney Rubble to mean trouble. Riiiight. In the end, it really doesn't matter if you like that we call ourselves Americans, or that in common parlance we refer to our country as America. It's what we do. And as it doesn't harm anyone, and only offends the obsessive-compulsive residents of Planet Earth, it's what we will continue to do. But if you don't like it, I insist that you immediately cease to refer to us as Americans in all conversations, written or spoken, and that you instead only refer to us as United Statesians of America. marl64: The victory means only one thing - Of the people who expressed a preference, more want him to run the country. It doesn't mean they agree with him, only that they agree with him more than they do with Kerry.
And that's the whole problem - limited choices Yep, that's very true. I'm not sure if any surveys have been done on the subject (probably, Americans love surveys and polls), but I'd wager that the majority of the country strongly disliked both candidates, and simply picked the lesser of two evils. posted by Tiefling |

Tiefling: Oh, so you're saying we should refer to our country as "Of," not as "America." Erhm... right. No, you should refer to your country as "The United States of America" not "America". And when you use the term "American" you're actually refering to every single person who was born in the "American Continent" (i.e. Canada, USA, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, French Guyana, Netherlands Antilles, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, etc, etc, etc. should I keep going? Tiefling: In the end, it really doesn't matter if you like that we call ourselves Americans, or that in common parlance we refer to our country as America. It's what we do. And as it doesn't harm anyone, and only offends the obsessive-compulsive residents of Planet Earth, it's what we will continue to do. It's rude, arrogant, and irresponsible. Do whatever you want, but then don't whine about why the world hates your culture and why things like 9/11 happen to you. And one last thing, the obssesive-compulsive residents of Planet Earth count for 6,372,797,742 people. The USA has a population of 293,027,571. Or 4% of the world population. posted by Echelon |
