Guest: Its sad really. Why? Let conformists be conformists, I prefer individuality but conformists are fiiiiine aslong as they don't adopt the stereotypes of whatever they conform to! E.g. becoming a moody bi goth bastard who by stereotype writes poetry etc. Guest: or what kind of music or movies you have to be interested in. You're right about that, changing your taste in movies is just stupid but I've already said that! Guest: If you were doing it to be original you wouldn't be worried if you can wear jeans or not I think you've got it all wrong, I'm pretty sure Fatpie's just doing it because he thinks it looks cool or he thinks he'll attract the ladies, nothing wrong with that! The movie/music opinion changing might be going a bit too far but my guess he just wants to sample something he's interested in! Guest: I have one question, why do people have the need to subscribe to a look? People do it to be comfortable about themselves, I don't do it because I don't like to be a conformist myself, but comeon, you can't get too annoyed at people dressing a way just cus they think it looks cool or because it helps them fit in and be comfortable about themselves! posted by hungarian kid |

Guest: I have one question, why do people have the need to subscribe to a look? Can't you be an individual? Don't say that you are trying to be an individual by being goth because its a lie. If you were doing it to be original you wouldn't be worried if you can wear jeans or not, or what kind of music or movies you have to be interested in. Personally I think you people are just as bad as preps when it comes to conforming to an image. Its sad really. did you notice the subject of my last post?...anyway how can you assume that all of us are "as bad as preps when it comes to conforming to an image"? where have i given the impression that i have conformed to any stereotypical image? where did this come from? is it because i/we have posted some suggestions as to what "goths" wear or listen to or look like? im sure you can add some things to the list also, no? have you ever seen someone and branded them as a goth? what did they look like/listen to? anyway, IMO what matters is what is "cool" to you. do what you want/like, and if fatpie wants to be a "goth" then let him, what do you care? is he hurting you or anyone else? let it be...let it be posted by allone |

I don't know ANYTHING about fashion. Do you honestly think I have the sense to be individual? You need to have a strong sense of fashion before you can start doing "your own thing" and even the experts like to look at other people's ideas. I need to get started. And the ONLY way I'm going to be able to experiment and see what I like is if someone can get me started. I may not choose everything. As you've already seen, I am not about to go "Oh goths get tatooed and pierced? Better do that then!" OR "Oh goth's throw themselves off cliffs onto large spikes do they? Right!" *starts his run-up* Without the advice allone is giving me, I wouldn't know where to start, never mind how to be original! posted by fatpie42 |

fatpie42: Hehe, very matrix! years ago punks used to get the high length Doc Martin boots and paint them in funky paterns and usually the union jack(which doc martin actually sell now, talk about art imitating life!) Cover them in studs and buckles and they did look bloody cool. There's nothing better than a pair of Docs absolutely covered in spikey studs, looks like something out of MadMax posted by Crossfade |

fatpie42: Without the advice allone is giving me, I wouldn't know where to start, never mind how to be original! im glad you like the ideas that i have suggested (i used to be a fashion merchandising major i was going to add about the make-up. you could also take your eyeliner pencil and use it on your lips...not too much, just enough to darken your lips..leave some red in them though. (i have found that eyeliner pencils work better than lipstick, doesnt fade as much) that would be great as a goth. you could also paint your fingernails, you wouldnt have to do all..maybe just your little finger on each hand or just one hand even...black of course. also, as far as the fingernails go, if you were to just paint your little finger you could also let that one fingernail grow out a little bit, then use a nail file to give it a point. if you don't want to pierce your ears you could get whats called ear cuffs. wear some rings; here is a website with a lot of gothic style jewelry that i found with a google search: posted by allone |

I've got a question: Why did you suddenly decide "I'm going to be a goth?" Relgious reasons? Just a sudden change of style? Friends' influences? Suddenly deciding to conform to a certain style just seems rather odd. Anyways, there's this goth clique in our school...most people steer clear of them...because they're pretty freaky looking (don't be offended, this is nothing personal...). This one guy has like spiky long hair sticking straight out from all directions (it's dyed black and gold) and he has very heavy makeup around his eyes and mouth...most of them time it's very...er...prominently colored (blood red, bright green/blue, and so on). He's also got like these holes cut in his jeans so they look all ragged-ish... Another guy chooses a less "stay-out-of-my-way" kind of style...but it's still pretty gothy. He has a mohawk (i know that's more punk, but whatever)...and he wears like this long black jacket everday...and black jeans. Keep your hair short though...Maybe for your hair you could wear...a hat? Or maybe a headband of some sort? Sorry, if these seem absurd, I'm running out of ideas... posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

One-der-man, Nocturnal, I'm confused. I am not putting myself in any kind of category. I am experimenting with the goth look. If I didn't do that, how could I possibly change my style? I first got interested in the goth style because (boringly enough) some friends of mine have a goth look. I am not trying to join a goth clique. I do not consider 'goth' to be something which defines me. "Suddenly deciding to conform to a certain style just seems rather odd." "why box yourself in to having a "style"?" Sounds like you guys are labelling what I am. All I'm doing is expanding my horizons. (It's like telling someone not to read about Buddhism by saying: "Why should you suddenly become a buddhist all of a sudden?" or "Why do you want to conform to a buddhist religious category?". People choose to expand their view of the world by looking into the styles of cultures of those around them. Only this way can people be tolerant and understanding.) posted by fatpie42 |

So you're becoming a 'goth' because you want to better understand the 'goth' culture? Not because you think it's cool and you actually want to be part of it? I am very confused. I can understand why someone would read up on Buddhism and philosophy and other things, but suddenly going for a certain style just seems rather...well, sudden. It's like me going from a t-shirt and jeans to short skirts and stilettos. (Wow, I just can't imagine... posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

You've never tried something out just to see what it's like? Ever worn earrings for example? If you are ever going to wear earrings you have to decide to get pierced. You can't just 'read-up' on fashion. You have to try it on! posted by fatpie42 |

Friad I only have words of experience. And they ain't too nice. Schools are always crap. Making new friends at school is always crap. The only good news I have is that the further you get past GCSE level the more mature and accepting people are. (GCSEs finish at around about the age of 16). If you are 16 or younger when you move into your new school - expect hell. Sorry... :s posted by fatpie42 |

I mainly go at the moment for the social interraction (and for music & philosophy.) gorgeous grunger: you should not be discouredged by your friends to become a goth i used to be a goth and a lot of people icluding my friends thought i was a freek why not go to tiger lilly and splash out they have lots of goth clothes and jellery. Aww, that's sad. Keep doing it, fuck what people think. I'd have to say, they're not really your friends if they don't accept you. It's not always easy finding great people, but they're out there. gorgeous grunger: does anyone have any encouraging words for some one who wants to change school but is too worried about changing and making new friends?
