Since black is prominent, such a statement like "The whole idea is non-conformism" doesn't tell the whole truth OR there is something further back/deeper down. Otherwise running around with a non-coformist crazy hairstyle and dirty clothes would be gothism, too. But it is punkism. Or trampism. I hereby state (in a completely undogmatic way): The idea behind gothism is to run around black and dance like snakes and behave like on a goth planet. And I think this comes closer than the "non-conformism" claim, because you can try to deduct goths from MY claim, but you can't from the non-conformism claim. In fact, goths WANT to be conform. With other goths (as ONEder Man states correctly). Thus you can say with the same validity that "academy awards presenters wear ties and dresses because of non-conformism" (non-conformism with, say, Indians), which is as stupid as "goths wear black because of non-conformism with the society". Another example would be "Gays like leather because of non-conformism". Moreover goths show gothic behaviour in their privacy, too: Having black painted walls and listening to goth music. AS IF IT'S USUAL to listen to goth music merely to be a non-conformist. Such non-conformism claims might be true, but it's not the main/core driving force. posted by knn |

fp42, i think it is good that you want to become a goth, good on'ya. I to am a goth, admitable i don't wear the whole eyeliner, but each to his or her own. But your pretty much on you way to become a goth, when people say get tattoo's they don't mean get a pink bunny, hell no. you will want somthing that has meaning, angle wings on the back, even your name in old gothic looking writing will look cool. Also the peircing will go down a treat as well. maybe the nose. so go crazy, and what every you do, do not listen to all those people that will call you a freak. you are an indvidual. so peace out bro, and good luck. The first time I got my face pierced, I was a lithe, sprightly maiden of eighteen. I was sitting in my room, reading a Bronte novel, when a huge, burly blacksmith burst into the room. He had obviously been drinking. He walked over to me and pulled me upright, so roughly, yet tenderly, that I dropped my book. The blacksmith ripped open my dress, exposing my ample breasts. He pushed me down on the bed and began driving a railroad spike through my nose. When he was done, he grunted and left the room. I wear the spike in my face to this day. "goth" is not a fucking style, trend, fashion, whatever you want to call it. You don't fucking decided weather you want to be "goth". Your born with the interest of being "weird". Also not all "Goths" are the same. You guys act like everythings a must. Whoever is trying to be "goth", your stupid, retarted.  Hmm goth used to be a way of life but now seems to be a 'fashion' just the same as everything else. I cant help but think it just another stereotype to fit into. I used to wear leather jackets and have REALLY long hair but now i look just like most guys.  blah: "goth" is not a fucking style, trend, fashion, whatever you want to call it. um, yeah it is. when you have a chain of clothing stores that cater to the "goth" look...i would most definitely say its a style/trend/fashion. as much as you don't want it to be, face it...it is. while you can say that "goth" is a frame of mind, it is ALSO a fashion. how do you know? well, just go outside...you see someone dressed in a certain way, carrying themselves a certain way...you say to yourself, hmm, that person is a goth. you judged a person based on how they look (this includes what clothes they are wearing), it happens all the time. now take that same person and put them in a ralph lauren polo shirt with a sweater tied around his neck and some khaki slacks and some brown loafers and what would you conclude? well that person must be some type of rich, snobby, preppy person. you know nothing about the person in the clothes, but from what they are wearing you have placed them into a group. why is it like that? i don't know, but we all seem to stereotype and seem to have this need to put everything into a category. some more so than others. are you a goth? do you dress a certain way? if you saw someone dressed similar do you automatically call them a poser without taking the time to get to know them? maybe they are even more "gothier" than you are and they might call you a poser. who the hell cares? do what you want, wear what you want. if you don't like what someone is wearing, you don't have to look at them. i don't even know why im saying all this, this guy wont be back. posted by allone |

 seriousally, I get accused of being goth a lot, I don't follow the whole goth lifestyle and all, but I do wear almost only black or red, and do the eyeliner and black nails and stuff. But really there isn't a guideline to becoming a goth, its not like your journey to nirvana or anything. GOth is about not being like everyone else, so why would you want to conform to some pre-set fassion if you obviousally want to break away from pop fassion? I say do what you want, and don't care what other people say about you or to you. You really shouldn't care. though I do think it is worth asking why you want to "become" goth?
