goth looks

You can always emulate the Morpheus look from The Matrix (the first movie, please, not the awful Zion tribal get-up). There's a lot to be said for the sophisticated 'Technocrat' goth look, which actually emphasizes a more clean-cut but severe image. For one thing, your parents might not object to your new fashion experiements if they see you choosing to dress up, not 'down'. So, black dress shirt (long sleeve), dress pants, long coat. Tie is optional (if you skip it leave your shirt unbuttoned a bit so the no-tie looks deliberate, rather than 'um I forgot my tie'), but must be black, red, or purple. Very short hair kept well-groomed. Wear dress shoes or dress ankle boots; heavy square-toed office shoes or monk-straps look good for this style. Look up some pics of Peter Murphy in his post-Bauhaus days for other examples.

Skip the eyeliner debate entirely if you wish by wearing black, red, or purple-lensed sunglasses. Contacts are a great idea, but scleral lenses that cover the whole eye will make your eyes hurt after a few hours, so steer away.

If hair is a problem, consider getting a good hat. Top hats, fedoras, even plain woolen berets. Your long coat might look quite good with black jeans, t-shirt of choice, and a top hat. Just take the time to get a quality piece, whatever you choose.

Accessorize, accessorize. Jewlery isn't just for the ladies. Leather or metal bracelets (or both, studded leather for example) are great, think thick and heavy. Masculine cuff styles. For your fingers, thick metal rings, preferably worn on your middle or forefinger if you can find them to fit. Wallets with the long chain attached. Metal-studded belts.

If you really want to go for the goth look, consider taking your time to get a good pair of shoes. There are lots of boots out there, docs aren't the only options out there. (Personally I don't find Martens comfortable at all). Consider army surplus boots. If you're going to wear jeans, you can wear black converse trainers (Chuck Taylors) but please buy black laces, don't wear the white ones that come with them.

You find your own style by trying different combinations. Hopefully you will have at least one giddy experience of having all your friends say 'What the hell is THAT?' only to be wearing it themselves just a few months later.

As for music, it doesn't so much matter if it's a 'Goth' band - whoever the artist is, they should speak to you on some deep emotional level, be it anger, despair, decadence, lust. Name any 'goth' band out there, you will find people who will disagree violently that (Insert Name Here) isn't REALLY goth, they're (contradictory pathetic genre) instead. So some will tell you The Cure are pop music with big hair and bad makeup, Manson is rock with good props and white contact lenses (when he's not channeling Alice Cooper), Good Charlotte/Other Emo Band Here are punk wannabes wearing eyeliner because the record company thought it would sell more records -- WHATEVER. Basically, there IS no Oxford Gothic Dictionary that makes the rules, and even if there was, a huge part of Goth is saying 'Fuck The Rules - I'm Mad/Miserable as hell and I'm going to make sure you all know it!'

So have fun, explore, and take lots of pictures! Someday you'll want them to prove to your disbelieving kids that you too were once one of the Rebelliously Cool.

Re: Becoming a goth...

fatpie42:
Anyone got any ideas for helping someone become a goth. Already my friends who aren't used to goth stuff are confused by me simply wearing black eyeliner. What I really need is to be pushed to do crazier stuff. Just wearing black eyeliner doesn't seem to be enough.

>I already have a nice black coat, but does it need to be leather?
>I always wear white trainers recently and boots never feel comfortable - any way to deal with this? :s
>Also can a goth wear jeans? - That needs to change too right?
>Biggest problem is probably my hair. I haven't got girly straight hair. I have blokey afro hair. My only way of dealing with this is to have it short. (Hmm I'm not a crazy goth so no asking me to shave it all off! I'll shave it short, but only SO short.)

Important things - I will not have piercings or tatoos. Not visible ones anyway... tummy piercings work well on girls but I'm guessing they aren't suitable for blokes right?

One more thing...

Must all goths have crap taste in movies? (I'm already asking about goth music in the 'songs you gotta hear' section, but feel free to give me more tips - Nightwish rock!)

Evil evil I'm gonna put you in my storeroom and eat you for breakfast Yes, oh yes.. keep going

there is a few rather humourous comment about how being a goth makes you an individual...no it doesn't...it makes you the same as the millions of other goths out there doesn't it?...yes...it does

the funniest thing was pointing out to a bunch of goths, one of whom had a t-shirt that said...you all laugh at me because i'm different...i laugh at all of you because your all the same...completely missing the irony that they all looked identical to one another

and then there's the ol' "i am a goth therefor i have to listen to x,y and z bands"

where is the indiviualism in that...musical taste and personal image should never be linked in anyway...it kills off any artistic integrity involved in making music

You know, I think there's a feeling that being a goth doesn't make you different from everyone, but it does give you a sense of belonging to a small group which is radically different from most other groups. Goths have their own style, but within that style there is still a fair amount of freedom of expression.

I do agree, however, that if you think being a goth means that you can ONLY listen to goth bands, that is a bit pathetic.

No it doesnt, you just belong to a massive group of people who have become some instrument of ridicule all lumped together under the EMO banner.

Personaly i don't give a damn what someone looks like or listens to, all i care about is that they conduct themselves like decent human beings and don't harm others. I know a few people that listen to goth music but look like they belong in an office, does that mean they are or are'nt goths?

Clothes do not maketh the man.

it's the fact that many people who choose any niche whereby image and musical taste are linked are narrowing their cultural parameters and experiences to ridiculously small and narrow fields

granted i look at it front a rather strange perspective whereby i have several distinct and separate areas of my life with regards to socialising

i have only 2 extremely close friends and they don't know each other

on top of that i have different groups of mates that i go to gigs with (depending on the genre)...different mates i go out on the town with...work mates...uni mates...old school mates...mates from my old neighbourhood and my close family members

so i get exposed to different groups of people through them...goths, emo "kids", ravers, clubbers,

and it saddens me to see how just about all of them are missing out on other great experiences simply because they choose to belong to a niche

perhaps i sacrifice having more great friends who i can lay my trust in totally but i have the 2 i need and i have loads of good mates and have met loads of great people

One doesn't simply become Gothic. It is a state of mind, behavior and heart...

Black clothes, piercings, eye liner, and black lipstick simply doesn't make you Gothic.

Goths are ones who follow these qualities.

1. You feel the need to spend a lot of time creating things (music, art, poetry, philosophies, stories and the like)

2. Your creative efforts are often described as dark, shocking, scary, morbid or strange

3. You like museums and cultural centers

4. You understand and even enjoy Shakespeare, Shelley, Browning or some other similar work without having to read the Cliffe Notes

5. You know the difference between nihilism and existentialism, even if you don't really live by either

6. You really, truly enjoy music of many kinds

7. You are a very sensual person (aware of color, texture, sound, taste and scent)

8. You don't understand why the people around you spend so much time watching TV

9. You don't feel comfortable looking just like everyone else you know

10. You do feel comfortable just being yourself, even if no one else around is anything like you

11. You wonder "why" a lot, and come up with some interesting answers

12. You wonder "how" a lot, and often figure it out on your own

13. You don't just reject something because you don't understand it

14. You base your opinions of people on who they are and what they do rather than what they look like

15. You are not afraid of the unknown

16. You are not afraid of the dark

17. You are afraid of mediocrity

This is what makes you Goth, not clothes, makeup, or whatever the hell most people say.
You don't have to not smile to be Goth.
Nyaa, Thank you for reading this is you did.
Hope I helped. ^-^
