Anyone got any ideas for helping someone become a goth. Already my friends who aren't used to goth stuff are confused by me simply wearing black eyeliner. What I really need is to be pushed to do crazier stuff. Just wearing black eyeliner doesn't seem to be enough. >I already have a nice black coat, but does it need to be leather? >I always wear white trainers recently and boots never feel comfortable - any way to deal with this? :s >Also can a goth wear jeans? - That needs to change too right? >Biggest problem is probably my hair. I haven't got girly straight hair. I have blokey afro hair. My only way of dealing with this is to have it short. (Hmm I'm not a crazy goth so no asking me to shave it all off! I'll shave it short, but only SO short.) Important things - I will not have piercings or tatoos. Not visible ones anyway... tummy piercings work well on girls but I'm guessing they aren't suitable for blokes right? One more thing... Must all goths have crap taste in movies? (I'm already asking about goth music in the 'songs you gotta hear' section, but feel free to give me more tips - Nightwish rock!) posted by fatpie42 |

You seem really serious about this, well back in my punk days goths used to wear black coats of any description, white frilly shirts, black jeans and boots of some sort preferably with as many cool buckles or studds on as possible. A question though, why do you feel the need to wear eyeliner? even back in the heyday of goth eyeliner wasnt such a big deal, to be honest dying your hair as black as a black hole was the deal and preferably making it spikey, a bit like Sid Vicious More goth images to help goths posted by Crossfade |

My mate wears eyeliner and I thought I'd try it out. I think it looks really cool. Besides on that goth website everyone wears it so maybe it just 'used' not to be a big deal? posted by fatpie42 |

If you wanna go the full mile, get white, black or red contacts, they're real gothy! If you're having trouble with boofy long hair, get dreads, they work really well if you have buffy hair! Or spike it up like Static X's singer! Black hair is the way (although I've never bothered with that) and I don't do eyeliner, just drawing on your arms in black or on your face is good enough, stuff like flames or whatever, heh I don't do that either but I see people do it and it look's allright! Just big black coats are a common goth clothing, and jeans are still good (everyone wears jeans.) Also wearing spiked collars or spiked wrist bands or spiked belts! If you wanna pierce something, just do your eyebrow! I don't see why you wanna change your music and movie taste... but there's alot of music that goths listen to! I mean ACDC wouldn't be considered Goth music but you'd be suprised to find alot of goths listen to them! Do you just wanna know bands that are mainly listened to by goths? Not sure the spiked-up afro look is really the one I'm going for. Not sure I like the pierced eyebrow look either. Does HIM count as goth (In style I mean. The actual musical content is quite typical rock I reckon.)? A friend of mine is really into Him. When I met her at Reading she was wearing all bright colours. Then I saw photos of her wearing gothy stuff and she sent me a HIM video over msn and I saw Ville Valo's style in the video and I decided it looked kinda cool (plus girls keep on saying how sexy they think Ville is - so i guess that motivated me too...) posted by fatpie42 |

PERSONALLY I WOULD COUNT HIM AS GOTH BUT ONLY AS GOTH - ROCK, THEY ARE IN NO-WAY METAL. AND IT KIND OF HELPS WITH VILLE'S GOTHIC SENSE OF STYLE. BUT I THINK I HAVE PROBLEMS OF MY OWN. YOU SEE I'M WHAT THEY WOULD CALL A GOTH OF COLOUR, BUT SOMEHOW I MAKE THE WHOLE GOTH THING WORK. AND MY FRIENDS ARE ALL GOTHS(OF DIFFERENT NATIONALITIES)THIS HELPS TO BUILD AN OPEN - MIND.(THIS IS VITAL IF YOU ARE BECOMING A GOTH) posted by DEATH DEALER |

In the US there is a chain of stores that caters to the "goth" crowd. Hot-topic: even if you don't have that store where you are, you can check out the site for styles and ideas. fatpie42: >I already have a nice black coat, but does it need to be leather? no, not necessarily, as long as its black and long. the longer the better. velvet is a good material too. fatpie42: >I always wear white trainers recently and boots never feel comfortable - any way to deal with this? :s hmm, the goths i have noticed all wear doc martins a lot of the time. any kind of bulky black boots with chains/studs/buckles...black motorcross boots work well, or you could go to an army surplus (if you have those) and get some black combat boots...the airwalk boots that neo wore in M1 would rock! you would get laughed at by the goths here if you wore white tennis shoes, unless they were some type of skater shoes. the best way to go is boots...maybe you could use some comfort sole inserts to make them less painful(?) fatpie42: >Also can a goth wear jeans? - That needs to change too right? no way, you don't need to change that! you can wear jeans! as long as they arent name brand, or "mainstream" that is. black jeans, like in the 80's, or torn up dark jeans will work well. fatpie42: >Biggest problem is probably my hair. I haven't got girly straight hair. I have blokey afro hair. My only way of dealing with this is to have it short. (Hmm I'm not a crazy goth so no asking me to shave it all off! I'll shave it short, but only SO short.) you could have it short and spikey, but it has to be black...jet black...maybe with blue or deep red highlights in it. i do the eyeliner thing at clubs sometimes too. sometimes its also cool to "wet" it and let it kinda smear around the eyes instead of just having a solid line around the eyes. (does this make sense?) hope this helps in any way at all. just some ideas. posted by allone |

I have one question, why do people have the need to subscribe to a look? Can't you be an individual? Don't say that you are trying to be an individual by being goth because its a lie. If you were doing it to be original you wouldn't be worried if you can wear jeans or not, or what kind of music or movies you have to be interested in. Personally I think you people are just as bad as preps when it comes to conforming to an image. Its sad really. posted by Guest |
