GMail has introduced POP3 access But won't their infamous text adds become useless then? Why would they introduce POP access? Is it because people are already using perl scripts to bypass the web interface, so they thought they might as well give users POP access? Is this part of some devious plan to make people dependant on GMail and then make at least POP a paid service? Knn is the google evangelist here, let's see what he has to say... ralph_angelus: GMail has introduced POP3 access Now if they did then this is the best thing they could do. I personally don't use GMail since I have my own mail servers, but GMail+Pop is supercool. You can fetch all emails by your favourite email client (e.g. The Bat Email Client ♣). posted by knn |

ralph_angelus: But why would they do it? Maybe more incentive for undecided users like you? Because without POP3 you don't have a possibility to transfer emails to your PC. They will always stay online. They will take up your space until you delete them. If you can fetch them to your harddisk it frees up your webspace and makes reading them faster. Moreover Yahoo.com Emails don't offer POP3 (only for $) thus Google tries to dry out its competitors. posted by knn |

What, all that ruckus about gmail keeping your mails forever was for nothing then? No, I don't think space on their servers is a problem. And there is an option to leave your messages in the gmail inbox even after they have been downloaded off the pop server. And I think most people will use that. Yeah, it's a real competition killer, but what about the ads? Why would they give users a chance to avoid viewing the ads? Oops, I thought fatpie made that post.. change the avatar knn.. posted by ralph_angelus |
