It doesn't say which are cults and which are religions. It says "cults" at the top of the list and includes Roman Catholicism, Buddhism and Hinduism. It doesn't give very good explanations of them either. However, as a list of religions I can give it credit for being long and diverse. posted by fatpie42 |

Actually, I think you're right, Pawn. Every belief listed on that page is being labelled a cult by whoever designed the page. And really, what's the difference between a cult and a religion but mainstream appeal? posted by Tiefling |

Quote: I always thought that all religions could still be regarded as cults. Actually cults are religions that have something secret/hidden. For example meeting at hidden places at night. But nowadays "cult" is just an insulting word for "religion". posted by knn |

How about a ritual where you drink blood and eat flesh every Sunday? Doesn't that make you a cult? Cult is simply a derisive term for a religion. It basically suggests that the people in the religion are being misled or brainwashed (like the cult in the Wako incident). If anyone saw the program about Sai Baba the other day, they might consider that Sai Baba is running a cult. But to anyone who does not believe the allegations against him and believes in his teachings, they would consider such a term insulting. posted by fatpie42 |

...was that a cult was centered around a figure, so the group in whacko -- I mean, Waco -- Texas, with the lock-in and the burning, mass suicide thing, in the late 90s, was a cult, because it had one guy at the center. In this way, it is said, Christianity started as a cult, and became a religion. Technically, this is mostly correct. American Heritage Dictionary uses this as its primary definition for 'cult.' Quote: 1.
a. A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader. b. The followers of such a religion or sect. The word comes from Latin, and means worship. Now, depending on your idea of 'worship,' a cult could be okay, or really not. For most people, I think cult means really not okay... probably why the so-called 'Mystery schools' are often called 'Mystery cults,' sometimes 'Mystery religions,' and accurately, 'esoteric schools.' posted by annaerullo |
