 If past lives exist, how do you account for the vast increase in people each generation? Where are all these new souls coming from? Or how is "soul" that goes from life to life created? How many would there be total? Can one be destroyed? posted by volonteshiva |

 volonteshiva: If past lives exist, how do you account for the vast increase in people each generation? i'm sure most of you have heard the statistic, but i thought i'd throw it out there for those who haven't... there are more people alive today then have died throughout history

Especially if as a soul=spiritual being you exist for hundred thousands of years and never die... There are so many people now, just as the ONEder Man says. It looks like only half of them (at best) can have souls. Well, maybe, there are souls we don't know about - like civilizations we didn't find out yet. Or maybe the souls originally come from another than Earth place, or places, and they keep coming, interested in life and experience here. Or maybe the souls can also multiply... split, for example, into two, and still be very powerful. I wonder what happens if the two splits that have forgotten they were one meet... volonteshiva: Can one be destroyed? Probably yes. Everything that has a beginning is supposed to have an end  The question is, what and where is the beginning for a soul. But actually destroying souls doesn't make sense - if we are short of them alrady, we just cannot afford to loose even more. Or maybe you can catch souls - like make a trap and keep it there...
Maybe the souls have always been there? Before everything - and as soon as something interesting appeared, they joined in. posted by mymla |

But actually a lack of bodies can also occur. Imagine there are 500 trillion trillion souls. Does it matter when earth's population is 1 billion more or 1 billion less? posted by knn |

Ok, so where did all these souls come from? Have they existed since the Big Bang or before in a possible previous universe? Crossfade: heaven and hell would be empty, everyone would be on earth trying to hijack all the babies Guess what? There is no heaven and hell other than in some people's imagination. At least I don't think there is any - the idea of heaven and hell is kind of less probable than living endless lives, because both those places would be overpopulated by now and all the difference would be lost. As far as babies are concerned... Isn't that what is going on now? Thousands of souls searching for a new fortunate body, haunting hospitals. I wonder how they settle conflicts if say three souls want that particular baby body... If there are so many of them (or rather "us"  ) as knn suggests, than I guess they don't all spend their time on Earth. There must be other places they can choose to go. Also, I guess in some cases "one of us" can take a non-human body he will consider attracting/beautiful/interesting enough. There are some highly intelligent animals, even too intelligent - like some dogs and horses and cats.

We are discussing opportunities here so far, right? If your theory will be consistent enough, we might consider believing it
So, knn, it would be nice if you would answer Volonteshiva's questions. I am very much interested too in where then they=we=immortal souls without bodies or currently with bodies typing this all come from? posted by mymla |

knn: I was simply pointing out that volonteshiva talks about "souls in bodies" but kinda doesn't make the conclusion that, hey, it's OURSELVES in bodies. Ok, accepted Though as I said, I guess now it is more of a theoretical discussion which will be applied to ourselves if we are convinced. 
Any way, I would be really interested to hear your point of view on where the souls come from after all. You seem to have a very interesting ideas about souls, and the part about their origin is missing yet. posted by mymla |

A reference to the notion of new souls expressed in the original post volonteshiva: Where are all these new souls coming from? The problem is with the notion that soul is inside the body, but a way of looking at it can be that our many bodies are flaoting and soaking into a flow of what can be referred as 'soul'. posted by blueSky |
