Hypocrites

It's amazing how people who passionately refuse to accept conventional religions or even the existence of god acknowledge something completely ridiculous like multiple lives. Indicates that it is not skepticism but just wishful thinking that is the motive.

yup the one question humans will never be able to answer(IMO) with technology OR religon is what happens after you die...hope is what drives all of this, hope you get eternal life, hope you get to see your family, hope you continue on, hope you have 1 million lives...

What is conventional? And who decides what is ridiculous

Conventional religion? What is that? Christianity?

Why should something like Christianity (= "Jesus died for future sinners such as gays") be NOT ridiculous, but something like past lives?

Is this your work mighty admin? That was posted as a reply to 'remembering past lives' but now its become a thread? Looks kinda half-baked because of that..

that's my point. Why reject one in the name of skepticism and then accept the other?

Two lives vs infinite lives

Let me also add the link to this old topic IMO → I consider the Christian religion as very simple

I still stand by my statement: Christianity is a very simple religion.

Yup. But I think anyone who believes to know where you go when you die is suffering from wishful thinking, be it those who subscribe to xianity or those who subscribe to reincarnation.

I think the true test of strength is to see if you can live a good life in the face of the belief that when you die, you go nowhere. No higher planes, no future lives. Just worms and decay, and a cessation of consciousness, never to return.

I think that if there are higher powers who judge us, that this is their test --- to see if humans are capable of morality without intervention. And I think humans are cheating and using religion and spirituality as a crutch.

wishful thinking

I have been baptised Russian Orthodox and believed in God (maybe I still do, but that doesn't matter). So, I do accept what you would call "conventional religion" - if not for me, than for others. But: all the time, being a Christian, I half-believed in past lives. I don't know whether it comes from the popularity of UFO and Co ideas, or whether from somewhere else.
I don't find the idea of multiple lives ridiculous just because it is not included in any of the "conventional religions".

Don't you think that all religions are just wishful thinking than? Anything but believing that you live one life and there's nothing before or after is actually wishful thinking, because there's only one fact, that you die and your body decays. Anything else, be it people who say they remember their children from the previous life or people saying Jesus talks to them, is pure speculation and wishful thinking.

I agree completely. But people have a need for a spiritual crutch, so they invent one. It gives their lives meaning.

i think the underlying theme is to give meaning, but another theme when religion was introduced, is being scared of death

Training wheels

Or perhaps training wheels. Some can do without them. But some learn to get going because of them. Going is all that matters.

And reincarnation is essentially a means. It is a means to generate awareness of consequences and of the temporary nature of physical existence caught up in its own pride. This awareness is the means as well as end in itself.

For someone who is bought into the ‘reality’ of the physical, going away from it is fear. But if there is awareness of its temporary nature, the journey away from it (towards the subtleness of unity) would have altogether different quality to it.

Yeah, past lives give some sense. They make you especially careful, because you don't want to ruin your next existences beforehand. If you only have one life, you can reach a point when you can say "I don't care any more, I do/don't what I want and why the heck I care what happens afterwards". Past lives can force you to keep being responcible for every single thing you do.
Tiefling:

I wonder why they need one. I think you can give your own life enough significance even without believing in higher powers.

Looks like people really want to feel that they have an effect on the world around them. They hope they will stay in the hearts/minds of people who knew them even if they don't believe in anything. They don't want to believe that when they are dead, the world will just go on.
People need to believe in something, otherwise they are kind of not happy and dissatisfied. Maybe it's the long-established tradition of believing into something that makes you feel wrong if you actually believe in science.

Also, I'd say the opposite holds true. People who are dissatisfied and unhappy need to believe in something.

Look how often disasters make people turn to religion.
