»Merry holidays...wait wha?«

Agent Zero:
and who would that be?

Don't get me started. But only this: Not a single wonder or incident written in the bible about Jesus is originally Jesus. Evem dying between 2 convicted criminals, coming back after 2 days, walking on water is not originally Jesus.

OK, here some virgin-born gods before Jesus:
In reality, the virgin-mother motif is common enough in pre-Christian cultures to demonstrate its unoriginality in Christianity. In Pagan and Christian Creeds, Carpenter recites a long list of virgin mothers:

Zeus, Father of the gods, visited Semele…in the form of a thunderstorm; and she gave birth to the great saviour and deliverer Dionysus. Zeus, again, impregnated Danae in a shower of gold; and the child was Perseus… Devaki, the radiant Virgin of the Hindu mythology, became the wife of the god Vishnu and bore Krishna, the beloved hero and prototype of Christ. With regard to Buddha, St. Jerome says "It is handed down among the Gymnosophists of India that Buddha, the founder of their system, was brought forth by a Virgin from her side." The Egyptian Isis, with the child Horus on her knee, was honored centuries before the Christian era, and worshipped under the names of "Our Lady," "Queen of Heaven," "Star of the Sea," "Mother of God," and so forth. Before her, Neith, the Virgin of the World, whose figure bends from the sky over the earthly plains and the children of men, was acclaimed as mother of the great god Osiris. The saviour Mithra, too, was born of a Virgin, as we have had occasion to notice before; and on Mithraist monuments the mother suckling her child is not an uncommon figure.

The old Teutonic goddess Hertha (the Earth) was a Virgin, but was impregnated by the heavenly Spirit (the Sky); and her image with a child in her arms was to be seen in the sacred groves of Germany. The Scandinavian Frigga, in much the same way, being caught in the embraces of Odin, the All-father, conceived and bore a son, the blessed Balder, healer and saviour of mankind. Quetzalcoatl, the (crucified) saviour of the Aztecs, was the son of Chimalman, the Virgin Queen of Heaven. Even the Chinese had a mother-goddess and virgin with child in her arms; and the ancient Etruscans the same…

In other words: Not even Xmas is a Christian invention. Moreover the modern Xmas as we know it (with the Santa Coke etc) IS an anglo-american invention.

Agent Zero:
but what does that have to do with christmas?

The only thing Christmas means today is
1) Gifts
2) Movies with Christmas theme, such as »How the Grinch Stole Christmas« or other Christmas movies:

Many xians have very little respect for other religions. They believe they are right and that's it.
They have done alot of harm in this regard. Especially in the US against American Indians.

ok, yours is a good portrait of the spirit of the holiday but I don't think it's the norm. Xmas is a commercial whore now. Just go hang out in a store or a mall in December and look at the total assholes people are and how they act over gifts. Look at the vast array of spoiled kids today that expect this and this and that gift and if anything isn't how they want it, they get pissed.

Plus Xmas time is so hectic and stressful for many and there is such pressure for it to be the great, awesome holiday that the media tells you it should be. I think many have such a negative experience w/ the commercial crap that they get burned out by dec 25th and it's just a letdown.

However, with that said, get rid of xmas presents all together and let's see how many people want anything to do with the holiday here in America at all.

Xmas in Russia

Yup, they say there's even a Christmas stress because of all the shopping you are supposed to do and have no time for, and that you are expected to enjoy it and you have no time to.
I liked this xmas stress test very much:

It has a way of generating results I don't quite get, but I liked it. How about this for example:
"An electric fence is an ideal gift for a dog"
Surely you are stressed Very Happy

And they have some tips. Don't know whether they help.

For Xmas is nothing special (unfortunately?). In Russia it was never commercialised thanks to the communism. They start to make it a larger holiday now, but it will take some time till it sets into the minds. Now it is purely a religious holiday (celebrated after the New Year, btw).
A holiday of similar magnitude is the New Year (eve). That means a tree, big dinner, family gathering and presents - all more or less the same. We have a guy who brings presents, whose name I is usually translated as father Frost. he has a girl, his granddaughter, to help him. He used to look like a fairy-tale hero, but now looks more and more like the Coca-Cola guy Not again

The fairy-tale hero looks a whole lot better. Much cooler looking costume. the Coca-Cola guy costume is recognizable but so boring. He needs a sword or a wizard staff of some kind! Body modification
