The ONEder Man: volonteshiva: ok, yours is a good portrait of the spirit of the holiday but I don't think it's the norm. Xmas is a commercial whore now. Just go hang out in a store or a mall in December and look at the total assholes people are and how they act over gifts. Look at the vast array of spoiled kids today that expect this and this and that gift and if anything isn't how they want it, they get pissed. how is this just the christians fault? not ignorant people in general? I am not/was not trying to tie in xianity into this particular rant. It's more of a critique of the commercial aspect of xmas and then in addition to the the religious aspects shows why I don't like the holiday. posted by volonteshiva |

I don't celebrate it religiously. I put up a tree, get presents, and stay home. It's just "Getting presents day" for me. I think I read somewhere that Jesus was born in March, but I could be wrong there. posted by Alranth |

The megastore Macy's in the USA replaced this year's greetings "Merry Christmas" by "Happy Holidays". As a result the "Committee to save Merry Christmas" was founded: posted by knn |

Christmas is celebrated here in a sort of big way, but I don't know that many Christians. There are a few 'devout' ones who go all misty-eyed about the history behind it and so on, but mainly the reason why they like Christmas is that it is the main event that makes the family get together whatever the busy life they're leading. If you don't like Christianity, or you don't like your family, or both, then enjoy the hols yourself! Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Although there may be some people who like family and all that bonding stuff. Today was Onam ♣, a festival seen as indigenous to a particular Southern state in India called Kerala, and even in our state the Keralites either wore the traditional dress or brought some traditional food. Festivals generally bring a spirit of fun and togetherness or something that people enjoy whether or not they believe or support the folklore behind it. This particular festival for example has very weird lore if interpreted literally. volonteshiva, you're not alone. But I'm too young to have the choice, and I'm just generally antisocial posted by ryder |
