Agent Zero: I am curious as to who here celebrates christmas...the most joyus time of the year! i would like to know who celebrates what here in IMO land...kwanzaa or maybe sometinh else..haunaku? cant spell it but you know what i speak of. But happy holidays...oh and what is your faovirte christmas memory? I will set the extreme for this post by saying that i don't really support any american holidays. i am anti-holiday. Most are nearly 100% commercial and I don't enjoy spending time with boring family so there is little for me to enjoy. ;( However, perhaps if I would donate my time to those less fortunate during big holidays then I would be less of a bastard and would have something to do and stand behind. posted by volonteshiva |

Yeah, people in Australia only really celebrate it as a commercial holiday! It exists to make money and get presents! Not many people actually celebrate it as Jesus' birthday anymore! I'm not a big fan of spending time with my family on christmas, and I'm not a big fan of recieving presents, so this year I'll probably spend half the day with my family and then set off to my friends house and get pissed with a few people I know who will be parentless for the day! Does anyone here actually celebrate it religously or are we all materialistic, present craving robots? posted by hungarian kid |

Hardly anybody celebrates it religiously it seems anymore. On the News there was some argument going on about no longer having street banners saying "Happy Christmas" and now in some places its got to be "Happy Winter Fest" so everyone non Christian can be included So even the true meaning of Christmas seems to be getting pushed right out the window to make way for a time just to eat, drink and spend money. posted by zesja |

I don't want any of the religious significance of it and I don't want any of the commercial aspect of it. But that doesn't mean I work to ruin it for anyone else. Tons of people love holidays, good for them. just don't include me, who cares? american holiday = holiday celebrated in america - that doesn't mean i said ONLY americans celebrate it. I said it this way to isolate my comment about holidays to only those shared here in america that I know of and have had to take part in. Doing xmas in japan or france could be totally different for me. There are special rituals and festivals celebrated worldwide that I would have an interest in. However, there is very little I enjoy about holidays celebrated here. I like shooting fireworks on July 4th, but only so much when you have to drive a state or two away to be able to buy and shoot decent fireworks. A few years ago, I realized that I would not hang out with family on holidays because nothing about them was interesting for me. Why should I go and be a bummer to everyone else and myself? All my family is strongly religious and I just don't want any part of that. Why should I feel obligated to see extended family that I have nothing in common with, say about 3 words to when I am there and then don't see them again for a year? I understand this is an extreme position and expect from flack from others about it. Hopefully there will be room for some debate on this. posted by volonteshiva |

Agent Zero: but you do realize that christmas is not an american holiday. its actually a holiday that's celebrated by the whole world. learn the history of christmas before judgeing it. Wrong. Christimas with Santa Claus (the friendly white-bearded man with the red dress) has been pushed into society by Coca Cola. Before that Santa Clause was the Saint Nicolaus (a bishop) running around with his servant and punishing children. Thus the PR behind Christmas IS AMERICAN. Moreover Charles Dickens (English) is said to be the inventor of what we call Christmas: Who invented Christmas? ♣. There you have it: Xmas is an anglo-american invention. i celebrate it religiously. but it has become more commercial through time. i had several hindu friends in high school that celebrated it. of course they didn't celebrate for the same reasons as i, but after i thought about what one told me, it made sense. the schools close for christmas. a lot of kids get all these new toys and stuff and then come back to school and talk about it all, or they are out in the neighborhoods riding their new bikes and whatever...to the non-christian kids it seems kinda...not fair. he told me that he has celebrated it for as long as he could remember...the commercial christmas is what he celebrated. he could care less about "this jesus guy or holy men...what is that all about? i thought it was just a holiday to be nice to people and give/get presents?" posted by allone |
