GO on then see if you can... No seriously, I found this the other day and it'll really knock you socks off. It's a 3D First person shooter, a kind of Doom Clone. The usual mouse and keyboad controls, a series of detailed maps and and wide variety of weapons and pickups. But what's the most amazing thing is the size. Yes it's all in there. Credit where credit is due. Quote: .kkrieger, chapter I - Beta Version
.a game in 96k by .theprodukkt (released at breakpoint 2004) There are screenshots from the game on the site - but they're probably bigger than the game

I got this a while ago and it still amazes me, i think the compression is something silly like 30,000/1 Shows you actually how lazy most games studios are by not using good programming tecniques to reduce the size of the game on your HD, UT2004 takes up 5.5gig for fecks sake! posted by Crossfade |

I hardly can believe that this is only 100k. Maybe it downloads something from online? Unbelievable. Do you remember good old C64 games. They were incrediblky small too. posted by knn |

The C64 was my very first computer...I absolutely hated waiting for the damn games to load-up... What was even more infuriating? You loaded up the game only to be told there was a syntax error in line **... You would have to rewind the tape and start all over again.. THANK GOD FOR PROGRESS posted by Another Smith |

Binatone Gun type Console Atari VCS (2600 with the walnut dash Commodore Vic 20 Commodore 64 Commodore 128 Commodore 128D Amiga 1000 Amiga 1200 and now (the lowest common denominator) PC (currently AMD XP2500) While owning a PC I also got (and still have) SNES N64 Dreamcast - MSR Still the best racing game EVER. knnknn: I hardly can believe that this is only 100k. Maybe it downloads something from online? Unbelievable. On the site that I first found it on, some guy was explaining that they use complex mathematical formulas to generate textures and maps - which is done you run the game. Stuff like Unreal uncompresses these to your HDD on installation. One of the most impressive "golden oldies" was Elite. This was tiny, but used accurate star maps for all known systems including orbits and positions of stars, planets and moons for any given time. This again was done mathematically using a small initial data set and a lot of number crunching. [ Added : 31 May 2004, 00:11 ] Crossfade: Project gotham racing 1 and 2 are made by the same guys who made MSR on dreamcast... Yeah, I didn't spot it at first, just put it down to an immitation, but then it clicked. For anyone else who missed it. MSR = Metropolis Street Racer Metropolis is the home of Superman Gotham is the home of Batman Geddit Neat way round licencing issues - I imagine Sega has the name "MSR" well and truly owned. posted by Marl64 |

That's one impressive piece of compression. I havn't been around for that long so I've only been gaming since the Old Windows 3.1's and Nes's. I've had and still have Nes PC 80Mghz (overclocked) Windows 3.1.1. Snes N64 GB Pocket PsX PC Celeron 400Mghz (overclocked) w/ Windows 98 PC Amd Athlon 1700xp 1.7ghz w/ Win XP and ATI Radeon 9200 GameCube Xbox I still play games from other consoles and I download Emulators for consoles. Thanks to emulators I've gotten to play games that I would never have been able to get in a physical form. posted by hungarian kid |

There was once an OS on 1 diskette (= 1.4meg) for the PC: MenuetOS ♣. Astonishing. Here's a description: "MenuetOS is a 32-bit, assembly written OS that supports pre-emptive multitasking, multithreading, and skinnable application windows. It even has its own http/mp3 server built in." Wow. posted by knn |

That sounds a lit like QNX (http://www.qnx.com/) demo disk. It was a full 32 bit pre-emptive multi-tasking OS on a floppy - as a demonstration of the portability of the system. It looked a lot like Windows 95, worked with pretty much all the hardware around and had a webserver, web browser, and a load of basic windows style apps. It also included a full website - including all the instructions and help. If anyone wants to try it - no installing, you just boot the floppy and you're away - there's some information and download links at qnx.projektas.lt...
